Two days following the quartet's departure from the Edge, it mostly consisted of following Stormfly as she urgently tracked Toothless's scent. It didn't take long for the group to realize how far west they were from the islands they knew. Neither the riders nor the dragons had ever flown this far west before, and all were equally anxious and eager to figure out the location of the Hidden World.
After another day of searching, Stormfly picked up on something.
I've... I've got it! She exclaimed. Lightbolt turned to her, his wings sparking.
You did? Which direction?
This way! She urged. Flying a couple more miles, they then heard a distant, watery roar. Their riders did not hear what they did, however. But Stormfly assured they were close.
"She's tracking something! Aren't you, girl?" Astrid observed.
"But there's nothing but endless sea-..." Hiccup trailed off, when the towering wall of mist rose from the ocean just up ahead.
"Oh. My. Gods..." Hiccup uttered out. The two dragons arced and soared over the colossal, empty cavern below them, the roar of the great waterfall was utterly deafening, the pungent smell of the sea filling their noses. They all felt suddenly very small compared to this natural wonder.
"A great waterfall-"
"At the end of the world!" Came Hiccup and Astrid's astonished words. Then, without warning, the two dragons daringly dove into the depths below.
The four riders shielded their eyes from the stinging, ice-cold ocean spray as their dragons flew away from the waterfall behind them. Upon opening their eyes, they were stunned to see an open cavern extending out in front of them, a distant glow beckoning them. Surrounding them were massive stalactites and stalagmites, framed by more cascading water.
In stunned silence, the riders observed this strange, otherworldly realm. Stormfly was picking up on so much more than she could've imagined, even Lightbolt could sense it, too.
They're here... She whispered.
Them, and more. Lightbolt agreed. Their flight took them deeper into the caverns, flying through a massive tunnel, with water below them filled with bioluminescence that gave the cave a stunning blue glow. Then another tunnel, covered with glowing plants and creatures, even a swarm of Fireworms! Whatever this was, triggered something in the scales of the Nadder and Skrill, their patterns and colors lighting up in an array of neon.
"Whoa..."
"Look!" Their sights were captured on tidal-class dragons swimming below them, as the tunnel opened up into a gargantuan cavern that seemed to have an inner light. The sounds of various dragon calls echoed around them, utterly stunned at just how many dragons occupied this space.
As entranced as they were, Astrid and Konall did not want the risk of the wild dragons noticing them, so they flew down to the ground, landing Stormfly and Lightbolt. The four dismounted the saddles, crouching low as they approached a ledge where they all got a clear view of the world before them.
"It really does exist..." Hiccup whispered.
Their eyes landed on the biggest crystal they'd ever seen in the center of the grand cavern, which appeared to have a natural glow. Gods, what a sight!
"To think... that this once only existed in my father's stories..."
"I can't believe it's real," Zyrah breathed, her eyes wide with amazement.
"You've got that right."
"We're the first people ever down here..." Together, the group watched as the endless species of dragons performed various flight patterns and aerial acrobatics, almost as if they were responding to something.
I've never seen other dragons react like that. Lightbolt quietly observed, a little disappointed at the lack of his own kind. Stormfly did not respond to his comment, though, as she picked up on both Toothless and Blueheart, and Nightfire, but she could not see them.
They're here, I know it.
Amidst the calls and cries of the other dragons, Hiccup was frantically scanning the landscape when his eyes averted up, and he saw two familiar figures. Toothless! And Blueheart!
He aggressively elbowed Zyrah to get her attention.
"Toothless!" He whisper-shouted, lunging forward, to which Astrid held him back.
"Shh! You'll spook them!" She warned. Zyrah remained silent as she watched the Night Fury pair emerge into the cavern from a space up above. Toothless roared as the pair took flight, circling down together, and soon a smaller figure emerged trailing just behind them.
"Nightfire!" Zyrah whispered, but retained her composure. The group watched as Toothless and Blueheart flew together in sync, surrounded by the other dragons who responded to their presence much like bees to their queen.
The Night Fury pair and the hatchling then landed on the massive crystal below them, settling themselves down. Toothless extended his wings, roaring towards his dragon subjects. Responding to their Alpha, the dragons appeared to 'bow', responding to the pair in unison, all emitting a unique sound and movement with their wings.
He's... he's their Alpha. Stormfly observed in shock.
They both are.
"Now that's a king," Astrid commented. Hiccup's face fell at this comment, which did not go unnoticed by the blonde.
Then, Zyrah watched as Toothless appeared to 'present' Blueheart to the dragons as his mate, the pair doing a little performance.
"Wait, where's the Light Fury?" Konall interrupted. As if he sensed it, there was more movement ahead as a white figure appeared.
The Light Fury!
"What's she doing?" The Light Fury looked to her two friends and their daughter, bowing to them in respect to their new positions.
Thank you, Elin. Blueheart said with a grateful smile.
It is my honor to serve you both. She stepped back, giving the family their space as the new Alphas of the Hidden World.
"The Hidden World... is their home now..." Zyrah conceded. On one hand, she was thrilled for Blueheart, but also sad that this was the way to let her beloved dragon go. But... this is what the Night Fury wanted, a safe place to raise her daughter, freedom from the world above.
Hiccup silently processed the reality that Zyrah observed, and she was right. But they couldn't stay any longer.
"We should go..." He announced. Suddenly, the sound of a wild dragon caught their attention.
INTRUDERS! The Rumblehorn cried out, lunging forward.
No! Wait! Lightbolt exclaimed, shoving the four riders out of the way.
"OH SHIT!" Zyrah screeched as she tumbled down the embankment, with the others right behind her.
"Zyrah!" Astrid called.
The Rumblehorn's alert sent all the other dragons into a panic, alerting Toothless, Blueheart, Nightfire, and Elin.
What in Thor's name? Toothless frantically searched the panicked crowd of dragons and was stunned to see Hiccup, Astrid, Konall, and Zyrah tumbling down the hill, knocking into plants and oversized crystals.
Shit, Myrai! They're here!
What?! Toothless then immediately took flight, chasing after his rider and the others, with Blueheart and Nightfire close behind.
What are you four doing here?! He demanded, knowing they couldn't understand him.
We've gotta get them out of here! Stormfly called to her friend. Toothless then roared to the other dragons to back off and stay behind, that he would take care of it, leaving Elin in the dust.
Toothless and Blueheart snatched up their respective riders, frantically tailing Stormfly and Lightbolt with Nightfire in tow as they escaped the realm below the sea.
Breaking free from the tower of mist, Hiccup, and Zyrah situated themselves saddleless on their dragons, contemplating what had just happened.
What had they done?
