That same morning, on the other side of the island, Blueheart peeled her eyes open, blinking a few times as she woke up. She was curled up under Toothless's protective wing; after their night of courtship and mating, they'd fallen asleep elated yet exhausted.

She stood and yawned, arching her back, careful to not spread her wings too much unless she wanted to hit the sides of the cave.

Next to her, Toothless also stirred awake, rolling onto his back, groaning.

Good morning, my mate. He drawled, tongue lolling out of his open, toothless mouth. He lazily yawned, watching the female closely.

Good morning... did you sleep well?

I slept... fantastic. Never slept that well before.

I'm glad to hear that. She sat beside him, nudging him gently with her nose, c'mon... I'm sure our riders are waiting for us.

Do we have to? He sighed, extending his neck out, poking her with the joint of his wing.

Yes, my love. We do. Something tells me your rider is the worrying kind. With another discontented groan, Toothless rolled over and begrudgingly stood, giving Blueheart a lick on the cheek.

I suppose you're right. Though I could just lay here for hours... watching you. Unable to hide her smile, Blueheart rolled her eyes with a shake of her head. She approached the cave entrance, shaking herself out.

Come on, love. She encouraged.

Alright, alright. I'm coming, I'm coming. After another stretch, and spreading his wings, he took off after her into the sky, circling back towards the forest to meet their riders.

It didn't take very long to reach the rider's camp, and it filled both Night Furies with joy to see the relieved faces of Hiccup and Zyrah, who immediately greeted the pair as soon as they landed.

"Thank the gods... you're both back safe and sound."

"Something tells me the other Night Furies wouldn't let any harm come to them," Zyrah assured with a smile. The raven-haired girl was over the moon for her dragon now that she'd found a mate. She knew Hiccup felt the same, both of them having thought for years this would never happen, but the Norns knew better than them.

And being on the island with the last Night Furies gave her some extra comfort, knowing the species wasn't extinct, but very much endangered. No words were needed to explain her desire to do whatever was necessary to protect them.

When the rest of the riders and their dragons woke up, all equally delighted the Night Furies returned safely, Hiccup relayed his plan, knowing Einar and Ragnhild would come.

"Should we come up with a defense layout? Like, to protect the forest, cause we know the colony is hiding deep within the woods. If they were to try and break past the treeline, that would be incredibly risky." Rurik pointed out.

"I was thinking something similar. As far as we know, it's just going to be them. They don't have allies that they'll be surprising us with. And it's all of us against them. But as a precaution, it's a good idea." Hiccup answered.

"So now what? What do we do while we wait?" Came Snotlout with his arms crossed.

"Well, we could take the time to explore more of the island, and learn more about the colony, safely." Hiccup offered, "it's a perfect opportunity."

"Learn their behaviors, and hopefully see some babies!!" Fishlegs squealed, a reaction that Ana shared.

"Just be careful about the hatchlings. I don't think the mothers will take too kindly to us following them."

Well, we're past the hatching season. No newborns as far as I'm aware. Blueheart said with a soft snort.

So they're less likely to be as aggressive? Lightbolt questioned, which was answered with a quick nod.

Not to say the mothers won't be defensive.

Obviously. Don't need dumb humans hurting the babies. Meatlug affirmed.

That brings me to ask, what is mating and hatching season like for you all? Blueheart asked. She'd seen her friends often leave during the winter, but never knew where they went. I've seen the dragons of Zyrah's brothers and the other dragons on Firewind leave every winter and come back with hordes of hatchlings. But I've never learned where they go.

It's a lovely little island, Stormfly explained. It's covered with hot springs, which is hugely beneficial.

Our eggs tend to... explode. Meatlug admitted with slight embarrassment.

Explode? What on earth?

Oh, the humans had a great time figuring that out. Hookfang laughed.

It was a mess. Poor Astrid, she had no way of knowing.

Probably wouldn't have been as messy if the eggs weren't in a haystack. Barf announced, earning a defensive snarl from Meatlug.

Hey! They didn't know! Blueheart rolled her eyes, already irritated with the Zippleback.

Well, Killgrave, in that case, good luck this winter. The Nadder scoffed.

Meh, I've had females pursue me, I don't care, though. I'm not into raising hatchlings... yet...

You're still young. Stormfly assured. Plenty to go around, I wouldn't worry.

Later in the day, Zyrah, Hiccup, Konall, and Astrid were making their way back to the arena-like space, hoping to check it out more. And when they arrived, the Night Furies were out and about, lounging, and the younger ones were playing together, with mothers keeping a close watch like wolves.

On a small cliff overlooking the space was Blueheart's father, closely watching his colony and now the humans. He took care to keep a safe distance away, and even though he recognized they meant no harm, he still chose minimal interaction. However, Blueheart's mother and siblings came down to greet Blueheart and Toothless.

"Good to see that she's still close with her family even after being gone for so long," Konall remarked, becoming distracted with a trio of hatchlings that scurried up to him and Lightbolt, sniffing them.

"It's really sweet." Astrid agreed, holding her hand out for a teenage Night Fury, letting it sniff her hand.

"I'm still in awe that this is really happening," Hiccup breathed out, overwhelmed with all the other Night Furies of all ages surrounding him. All those years ago, when he and Toothless were duped about the Isle of Night. And now... his best friend had a mate and had a family waiting for him here.

Blueheart was thrilled to see her friends started families of their own, their hatchlings scurrying up to her, getting to know who she was.

One of Blueheart's friends, Lyrani, had a very successful hatch; with three babies to care for.

Two girls and a boy.

Ryvir, I want you to meet someone. She called out. The y0ung Alpha joined her side, and Blueheart introduced him.

Lyrani, meet Ryvir. Ryvir, Lyrani.

It's nice to meet you! A Terror told me you're mates now?

Word gets around fast, but it's true.

I'm so glad to hear! You always had high standards. Lyrani mentioned, grabbing her son by the scruff of his neck to groom him. Blueheart scoffed in embarrassment.

You didn't have to mention that...

Of course, I did! Your brother's friends never had luck with even trying to flirt with you.

Well, we were kids. I was too young to think about trying to find a mate.

Meh, kids are overrated. Lightbolt chimed in from behind Blueheart. Earning a cough-laugh from Stormfly.

Says you.
