"Hey, good luck at practice today!" I say to Sunwoo as he slams his locker shut, angrily, as usual.

"Thanks, I think the coach is-"

"Sola, you ready?" A voice interrupts him and we both turn to meet Hyunjae standing behind me.

The feeling of him standing behind me makes me feel safe, excited even.

"Yeah," I say, and then I turn back to Sunwoo. "I'll call you later, tell me all about it!"

"Sure," Sunwoo says. His voice is blank, and he hasn't taken his skeptical eyes off Hyunjae as he walks the other direction.

"He hates me." Hyunjae says.

"Your friend did give him a black eye." I swing my backpack over my shoulder.

"Only because he tried to beat the crap out of me!" Hyunjae says. "But no, you're right. He has his reasons to hate me."

"He's just protective." I add as we walk through the busy hallway.

"Of you?"

"Yeah I mean like I said, he's like my brother." I explain. "It's that kind of bond."

Hyunjae hums in response, almost like he's holding back saying something.

I clear my throat, "So where are we going?" I ask.

"You'll see," He says.

"That's annoying."

"That's exactly what you did to me yesterday!" he laughs.

"Okay well..." I trail off, not having a good comeback.

"That's what I thought," He teases.

We make it to the senior parking lot and get in his car. A month ago I wouldn't ever have imagined sitting in the passenger's seat next to him. But now, it feels so natural.

We drive closer to our neighborhood and I wonder if he's just going to take me back to my house. And with that I feel disappointed, because I hope he doesn't identify me with my cold, empty house.

But we don't go into our neighborhood at all. He cruises along the same road I took him to for his picture, and then makes a turn.

"The bridge." I say as the ground texture shifts beneath the car as we go along it.

"Not here, but close." Hyunjae says.

"The city? But I've never even been there," I say.

"Don't stress. Just trust me." Hyunjae glances at me.

Seeing him driving next to me, one hand on the steering wheel with the window cracked open, as his hair flutters in the wind, it looks so...

boyfriend material

no! sola, no. That's not what it is. He's not.

"Do you get carsick?" He asks suddenly.

"Huh? No," I answer.

"Oh, okay. You look distressed." Hyunjae says. "Hey really don't worry. I promise I'm not kidnapping you."

"Good," I look straight ahead of me as we cross over the bridge. "I was worried about that for a second."

"Or maybe I am. Who knows?"

I laugh and I unroll my window. The sound of the world speeding past us blocks out the soft radio music. I rest my arm on the opening and I slowly slide my hand out the window. I feel the cold air against my skin.
