Everything I Wanted

"If I knew it all then, would I do it again?
Would I do it again?"

"Dr. Fiege?" I'm suddenly woken up by the sound of my co-workers voice. "You're wanted in the opering room in thirty minutes, ma'am."

I nod, rubbing my tired eyes. "Okay, thank you Sam."

Situating myself in a seated position, I quickly proceeded over to the changing room before going to the procedure.

These past few days have been insanely packed with surgeries, It's honestly exhausting. Though it's definitely my escape from reality, and I wouldn't trade my job for anything. I was lucky to be able to come back, and better than ever at that. Being honest, it was extremely hard to get back to normal after what happened two years ago, and I'm still not, but I'm proud of myself for being where I am now.

After throwing on my surgical outfit, I glanced at the nearby clock, seeing that I was just on time.

"Alright, what do we have? I ask, rushing inside the operating room.

"Hello miss, he needs an abdominal aortic aneurysm repair." My assistant answers.

I hummed, turning my attention over to the certain tools I needed for the surgery.

Once I'd gotten the patient ready for the operation, my other assistant did the first steps whilst I prepared for it. "All set?" I ask, focusing my attention on the many tools in front of me.

"Yes, he's all ready to go." Nathaniel replies.

Walking towards my patient, I started making an incision down their abdomen, while placing a clamp below the site of the aneurysm to stop the blood flow. After doing so, I cut open the aneurysm sack and connected both ends of the aorta.

Once I'd removed the clamps, I sutured the aorta back together and stitched their chest. Extending my hand, "Bandage please."

After applying the bandage, I inserted a tube through my patients mouth to drain any stomach fluids before they were taken to the intensive care unit.

"Well that was fast." Nathaniel comments, making me chuckle.

I shrug, "It was a simple procedure."

I see him widen his eyes in shock. "If that's simple, then I don't want to know what's hard."

"Definitely open heart." I reply while walking out the door.

Making my way back to the changing room, I was finally ready to get out of here. Thankfully, that was my last procedure of the day. I couldn't be any more grateful for my new schedule, as I didn't get off at three in the morning anymore.

As I grabbed my bags and headed towards the door, I was interuppted by one of my many co-workers. "Hey, Y/n!"

I turn my gaze over to her, "Yes, Lena?"

I'm not going to lie, I was quite annoyed. It wasn't her, just me. Ever since what happened a few years ago, I've had terrible social anxiety. It took me months to even get back out of the house and interacting. Nathaniel is the only one who was somehow able to pull me out of my shell.

"Well, I was about to go to this cafe spot for lunch, and I was wondering if you'd like to join."

I only hummed, taking what she said into consideration. Nathaniel has been urging me to go out and make friends, which I desperately needed to do.
