"Ballad. From middle english balade." Mr Shue said writing the word on the board. "Who knows what this word means?"
Rachel put her hand up.
"Its a male duck." Brittany said. Gabby put a comforting hand on her shoulder.
"Kurt." Mr Shue called.
"A ballad is a love song."
"Sometimes, but they don't always express love. Ballads are stories set to music. Thats why they're the perfect form of self expression. Stories and music are the way we express feelings that we cant get out any other way. Okay, now sectionals are in a few weeks, and theres a new rule this year. We have to perform a ballad."
"Looks like my weekly letter to the Ohio show choir committee finally paid off." Of course Rachel would do that.
"So here's our assignment for the week. Im going to pair you off, and i want you to pick a ballad to sing to your partner. Look them right in the eye, find the emotion you want to express and make them feel it." Mr Shue explained
"I pick Quinn." Finn said.
"No, no. Too easy. Your partners will be chosen by fate. I put all your names in this hat. Whoever you choose, is your partner."
"I bet the ducks in that hat" Brittany murmers to Gabriela. "Definitely."
"But theres an uneven amount of us." Santana spoke up.
"Um i guess i just have to put my name in the hat for now, until we find someone." Mr Shue said writing his name and putting it in the hat. "Who's up first?"
Puck went up to the hat and pulled Mercedes. Artie got Quinn.
Finn got Kurt. "Mr Shue i dont think i can do the this with another guy." He said embarrassed.
"The fates have spoken Finn." He said waving him off.
Tina got Mike. Brittany got Matt.
Santana went up and pulled a paper. "Gabriela" she announced with a smile on her face. When she came up Gabby gave her a high five and hugged her.
"Looks like i get you Mr Shue." Rachel said walking up.
"Uh on second thought lets wait until we find a replacement." He said trying to get out of it.
"The fates have spoken Mr Shue." Finn said
"Would you mind clarifying what songs you want us to sing" Artie asked
"Why don't you let Mr Shuester and i demonstrate" Rachel told him. "Brad endless love in 'B' flat please. Its my favorite duet."
"I really don't think thats appropriate Rachel."
"Why its a great song and a perfect ballad."
"Yeah i really like that song Mr Shue" Finn added.
The whole performance was odd.
"Doesn't this seem a little weird?" Gabby turned to Santana and asked.
"A little? This is totally weird." She replied laughing.
Gabby was grossed out.
"All right," Mr Shue said as the song ended. "Something like that. The bell rang and everyone got up.
