You are walking down the side of the road on a rainy day, carrying a very heavy backpack that makes your shoulders hunch. There are books in that backpack that you brought home, stamped, and glued some barcodes on for your librarian. You hope she'll be happy with the job you did, as it had taken you an entire evening to do it. You had done so willingly with your own time, helping out because you felt like it, and had taken on as many books as you could carry on your back.
As you walk down the backstreets of the city, you notice a bunch of people standing together, wearing brown uniforms with a very specific logo on them. They are standing in an alleyway between two houses, four girls who are happily chatting and laughing. It's the uniform that sticks out to you. Even though it's as plain as any uniform can get, it's one that only the most talented individuals in the world can wear.
It's the uniform belonging to the students of Hope's Peak Academy. Only the best of the best people in the world can attend the school.
You quickly tear your gaze away from the girls and turn to carry on walking. But one of them shouts out, noticing you before you can sneak off.
"Hey! You! What are you looking at?" The girl was skinny with long, blonde, straight hair. She has that curvy body that one would expect from a supermodel.
"S-sorry! I'm just on my way to school and I got distracted." You look at her and the other girls apologetically. "I'll be on my way."
The girl scoffs and begins to walk over to you. She is a bit taller and her eyes have to look down to glare into your own eyes. "What? Do you think you can get away with staring at me like I'm some kind of zoo animal?"
"I-!" You try to amend your mistake but she continues ranting at you, causing droplets of spit to splatter across your face.
"Ugh, I can't believe nobodies like you live so close to Hope's Peak. Only talented students should get to live here." She smirks at you. You can already tell that she has malicious intent. "Well, sorry, but you can't stare at me without paying some sort of price."
"Huh?" You're completely flabbergasted. The girl is crazy! You take a nervous step back. "I, um, don't have anything to pay you with. I'm sorry."
She immediately steps forward again, aggressively getting into your personal space despite your efforts to back off. She is sneering now. "Of course, you don't! I should have expected that. You don't have any worth, so it makes sense your finances would reflect that. But you still need to pay me!"
You want to pull away from her but you know it'd be no use. She has made it clear that she doesn't intend on just letting you be. Behind her, the other girls are snickering and whispering to each other about how pathetic you are. You feel like you're going to wither away in humiliation underneath their mocking gazes.
"I-I'm really sorry!" You try to hide the tears that you can feel threatening to spill out. "I didn't mean to stare or bother you. I don't have anything to pay you with b-but I really didn't mean anything by it!"
The girl scoffs. "Show me what's in the bag!"
Before you can object, she grabs you by the shoulders and forcibly turns your body so that your backpack is facing her. The rough movement causes you to fall onto your knees, wincing as they hit the pavement painfully. She yanks the backpack free from your shoulders. Although the lack of weight feels very good, you want to get the backpack back from her.
"Those books aren't mine! Please give them back!" You turn around and scramble to your feet, only to have one of the other girls come and shove you so that you land on the ground again. You're unable to stop yourself from finally giving in to the tears that had been threatening to spill. "Why are you doing this to me?"
The girls are already rummaging through your bag. They ignore your cries and begin to dump some of the books on the ground, sneering at you and calling you a bookworm and a teacher's pet.
Just as you're about to break down into sobs completely, a shadow looms over you from behind. You flinch and look over your shoulder, surprised to see a boy with long white hair looming over you. His expression is unreadable as he looks down at you but he is wearing the same brown uniform as the girls who were still going through your backpack, signifying that he is a student of Hope's Peak Academy. Your heart sinks, fearing that he will join in with their mockery.
To your surprise, he looks away from you and walks toward the girls. "Um...what are the four of you doing?"
They all jump and look up at him. They obviously hadn't noticed him coming and had been too busy ransacking your books.
"Ew, it's that guy again!" The girl who started the whole fiasco stands up with a look of disgust on her face. She drops your books and scowls at the white-haired boy.
"Whatdya want?" One of the other girls asks haughtily.
The boy chuckles. He crosses his arms. "I came to see what you were doing to this girl. She must be quite powerful for four girls like you to feel the need to gang up on her."
The demeanour of the girls had changed slightly, as though off-put by the boy's appearance. The blond girl is still scowling, though she is beginning to move away. "Let's just go. I didn't expect this...freak...to come to take her side."
With that, the mean girls left you alone with the boy. Immediately, he reaches his hand out to you, smiling warmly.
As you take his hand, he helps you to your feet and introduces himself to you. "Hey there. I'm Nagito Komaeda. Mind if I help you pick up your stuff?"
