Meeting with Nagito before and after school soon becomes a regular occurrence. As weeks go by, the two of you continue to talk and form a friendship. Even though you only talk to each other for a short period of each day, you mutually enjoy being in each other's presence and appreciate the fact that you get to spend time together at all! It only takes about two weeks for you to ask if he wants to be your best friend...to which he eagerly replies with a "Yes!" It is clear that you are already forming quite a bond.
Although he is almost always on time, there are times when Nagito shows up later than usual. The only reason he ever arrives late is that his luck cycle causes insane accidents that get in his way. He is always immensely apologetic and you always assure him that he's fine and that you're just happy he's alright. He gets into a lot of accidents and you have learned to worry about him as a result.
Sometimes, some bad things happen to you as well. He is always apologetic and blames these occurrences on his luck cycle. He has told you that his ability causes things to happen to people he's fond of. You happen to, of course, be one of these people. He does what he can to make sure nothing dangerous happens, including taking the safest routes possible when going to and from school or the park. Even though you think it's overkill how cautious he is, you are happy to see that he cares about you enough to keep you safe and think that his luck may be a threat to you due to the fact you're his friend.
During the time you've talked, you finally have gotten some insight into his life. It turns out that his luck has absolutely destroyed him, though that isn't how he sees it...at least, on the outside, it isn't how he sees it, and so far he seems pretty open with himself. He doesn't hesitate to answer even your most intrusive questions. What he revealed about his life is...shocking, to say the least.
Nagito was the only child born into a rich family. When he was in elementary school, someone hijacked a plain during a vacation and a comet came flying in, killing the hijacker and everyone else on the plane other than Nagito...including his parents. He saw the hijacker's death as good luck and the deaths of his parents, along with everyone else, as the bad luck that followed it. However, he also saw the wealth and freedom following his parents' death as good luck, though you don't understand how he could have survived so long on his own without caregivers. According to him, his luck caused the deaths of his extended family as well and left him without a single person left in his life. His luck affected those around him as well as himself. After the deaths of everyone around him, it took to causing horrible things to happen to him, though he hasn't told you everything about that aside from the fact he was invited to join Hope's Peak at the same time as "something else" was revealed. You want him to tell you more but he seems almost reluctant to do so, claiming that he "doesn't want to worry you."
Now, you are sitting with him at the park like you usually do. You feel comfortable as you talk to him about your day. It hasn't been a particularly good day, though being with your new best friend somehow outweighs the bad. You are sure to tell him this, which makes him overjoyed.
"It's an honour for trash like me to really have a positive effect on you!" Nagito puts his hand to his heart. "I...I can't believe it! Even though you aren't an ultimate, I still feel really happy that I'm able to make your day even a little bit better. I'm also glad that you continue spending time with me. I've never had anyone to do this with. Although...I am a little worried."
"Why?" The question comes out of your word immediately after he is finished saying the word "worried." You feel a nervous twinge in your heart, though that's common whenever someone says anything to you that could have negative indications.
"Well...we're best friends now. I've never felt so happy before in my life! My luck truly has graced me." Although he is still wearing his usual smile, there is a distant look of worry in his pale green gaze. "That said...I'm putting you in danger by caring about you at all. Us being friends could lead to your death, thanks to my luck cycle." His words are blunt and he doesn't sugarcoat anything. The way he openly says that is quite jarring.
You don't know how to respond to that. You simply tell him that you still care about him and explain that you want to be his friend in spite of the risks. Regardless of how anxious the thought of death makes you feel, you truly care about the boy and don't want him to be lonely. You feel a strong bond with him even though you only recently met. Your friendship is growing very fast and you're certain he is...well, the best friend someone can have!
He does go on rants about hope and despair quite often, often calling everyone- including you- worthless due to their lack of talents. But you have grown used to these rants and are beginning to understand that he has his demons that have led to the way he views the world. You know he doesn't personally dislike you. After all, he wouldn't have agreed to be your best friend if he did. Sometimes his barbed comments hurt though. You're too shy to tell him when they cut deep into you. But you wouldn't change him. His views are unique and his admiration for hope is something that draws you to him.
Regardless of how harsh he can be with his views, he truly is a good person and treats you with respect and honesty. You are grateful that he has come into your life...even if his luck could harm you.
