Caged to Death

Toothless was trying to find a way out while I was trying to calm him down. "Toothless, calm yourself! I will go to him. Stay here," I say, and in the end, he calms down and stares at me with wide green eyes "you can't! they'll like you more likely than me!" he frets, and I give him a raised brow.

"If you haven't noticed, nothing except dragon claws can pierce my scales. I'm safe, and I'll be fine, alright? I gotta save Hiccup, yknow?" Without caring that, Toothless tried to stop me; I took to the skies a moment later and headed toward where the scream came from. When I came closer, I heard the shouts of Vikings and saw their fleshy paws point to the sky where I was.

But I cared little. Hiccup was my main goal. I roared as I flared a spear of fire at the cage-like dome meant to keep dragons in and from other dragons entering. It didn't keep me. I let out a hiss as I tackled the red-black dragon who had attacked Hiccup. "gah! what is wrong with you?!" he roared as he tried to wriggle free out of my claws, snapping at them, but his teeth didn't make a dent.

They stung, that was all. I snarled at his face showing that I would burn him if he didn't calm down. My long tail was wishing around, nearly knocking Hiccup off his feet when he stood there panting.

"no one touches that boy, understand?" I growl, my face lowering. The dragon hissed but stopped struggling. With a satisfied huff, I let him go and crawled over to Hiccup to check him for any wounds.

He had none. He was only shaken. "t-thank you..." he said, and I smiled, nudging his chest "anything for my friends," Hiccup smiled as he understood what I said. But then the shouting of his kin came, and I whipped around, snarling and curling myself around Hiccup to shield him from the humans.

But they just kept coming, and even when I started to whack them, did they come? I then saw a burly man, their leader, and all common sense left me, my instincts screaming that I should attack, kill and burn. I swiped at the humans before rushing over to the man and clamping down a talon on him, pinning him while my fire built in my throat.

"No!" called a familiar voice, and I snapped my jaws, turning to see Hiccup tugging at my wing. "please let him go!" He called, and all my anger dissipated. "are you sure?" I asked. Hiccup nodded and let go of the burly man turning all my attention to Hiccup. "see? That's better, yeah? Now you have to leave," he said, and I frowned "why? You think they can-" I didn't get to finish until a hoard of men piled upon me, tackling me. I roared and swung my head, shaking most of them off.

But they were too many, and soon they overpowered me. I roared and struggled, but I couldn't get free. Flames I couldn't let go either for fear they would hit Hiccup. So with much effort, the men brought me into a cage.

I gave them wounds then that would last for the whole year, but other than that, I did not lay a claw on them as I promised. "Hiccup!" I called from inside as I saw him being dragged away by the big man. Anger welled up inside me, and I took a quick look around the cage to see if it was empty or not.

And luckily, it was. I let go of all the anger I had in the fire. My fire burned its way, hidden among the furniture in here. Even the iron that kept the gate of my cage closed bent. I hissed and let another rain of fire flood the room; its heat was nothing against me.

But soon, men came, and they dragged me down to a pier and put me in a cage until, this time, I got something to tie my jaws in place. I let smoke seep out of my nostrils and hissed and growled.

I don't know why I couldn't take them all. At home, I had managed to kill a whole herd with the Ork. I showed no consideration when I took Dale or Erebor, so why am I doing it now?

You have gone soft, Smaug, said a voice in my head. You are not the queen you say you are. You let some nasty people take you down and tie you up? What happened to the great Yellow Drongin, who heartlessly burned cities and stole gold? Where is she?

She's here, but I don't kill people anymore, and you know it! I hissed back. The voice laughed darkly, yes, I noticed. Thanks to that friend, you have got yourself caught. Now you will be used in numbers bait or as a guide to the Nest. Let's see how long those people let you live. Maybe your little friend will save you, hmm? Or does he not? Let us see.

And the voice fell silent. I snorted but continued to struggle against the chains that held me in place, but without my fire, I didn't have the strength to break free. "why don't we just throw her off a mountain, Steinur?" a voice asked, and I hiss silently but listen to them anyway.

"Because HIccup said she had been to the Nest. The place we've been looking for all year. Gobber, this could be the key to ending the dragon tyranny. After we find it, we can always wrestle with the loose weight," said the big man and looked sideways at me. I glared back, teeth glinting in the dim light from the sun.

The Fog had begun to descend upon us. But something told me we were on the right track. I hope the Queen kills these people and that in the chaos, I will be seen free. And maybe then I can finish what I started.
