___
I'm waking up to ash and dust
I wipe my brow and then I sweat my rust
I'm breathing in the chemicals
I'm breaking in, shaping up
Then checking out on the prison bus
This is it, the apocalypse
___
___
"Prisoner 212 face the wall." A guard says as he enters the small cell.
The girl stands from her cot and backs up nervously.
"What is this?" She asks.
The guard walks closer to her with some kind of device in his hand. "Hold out your right wrist."
"Wait no. No this can't be right. I still have time. I don't turn eighteen for another few weeks! Please don't do this. Please!" She shouts.
Another guard enters holding a baton. "Hold. Out. Your. Arm."
Skye is seventeen. On the Ark, any crime is punishable by death unless you are under eighteen. Once minors turn eighteen, they get a trial. If they lose, they get floated.
She pretends to hold out her arm and then shoves past the two guards in her cell. She slams the door, closing them inside and rushes to the edge of the balcony of the lockup section. She looks around and sees all the other teen criminals getting taken away as well.
"They're killing us all." She whispers to herself
She backs away as the guards exit her cell. Suddenly she hears a voice. Her mother, Abby. "Skye!"
On the Ark, the law is strict. Only one child.
When Skye was born, her mother Ilene died during labor from blood loss. The following day, her father took his own life, leaving her without a family.
Abby and Jake Griffin, who already had a daughter on the way, asked if they could take her in as their own. The council agreed and Skye was adopted into the Griffin family, outraging some members of the Ark.
Although not biologically related, the Griffins are the only family she has ever known, and she loves them like they are her blood.
