The walk starts off silent. Everyone taking in the sights as they trek forward.
Finn picks a purple flower from a bush and gently pushes it into Octavia's hair who smiles at the gesture.
Jasper smiles and nudges Monty. "Now that, my friend, is game."
Monty grins. "That, my friend, is poison sumac."
Octavia quickly brushes it out of her hair. "What?"
Monty picks one up. "The flowers aren't poisonous. They're medicinal, calming, actually." He says as he pops it into his mouth.
Jasper chuckles at their confused faces. "His family grows all the pharmaceuticals on the Ark."
Clarke, who was walking ahead, spins around, irritation written all over her face. "Hey, guys, would you try to keep up?"
"Come on, Clarke. How do you block all this out?" Finn says pointing around.
"Well, it's simple. I wonder, 'why haven't we seen any animals?' Maybe it's because there are none. Maybe we've already been exposed to enough radiation to kill us. Sure is pretty, though. Come on."
She keeps walking forward and Octavia mumbles under her breath. "Someone should slip her some poison sumac."
Skye huffs out a laugh at the comment. She isn't wrong.
Clarke has always been the headstrong one. She overthinks everything.
Finn turns back to Jasper and Monty. "I got to know what you two did to get busted."
Monty eats another flower. "Sumac is not the only herb in the garden, if you know what I mean."
Skye snorts at that causing them to smile.
Jasper pokes Monty. "Someone forgot to replace what we took."
"Someone has apologized, like, a thousand times."
Jasper looks at Octavia. "How about you, Octavia? What'd they get you for?"
She slows her walk. "Being born."
Monty's eyes widen and he glances at Jasper who face palms. "That was so not game."
Suddenly Clarke stops and holds up her hand. Everyone slows down and look where her eyes are. There's a deer.
Finn smiles at her. "No animals huh?"
They all crouch to admire the animal who is looking in the opposite direction. Finn tries to take a step closer when suddenly he steps on a twig, causing the deer to look directly at them.
Everyone gasps. The deer has two heads.
___
The group continued on their journey after seeing the mutilated creature. Worries of radiation oozing in their minds.
"Hey, you know what I'd like to know? Why send us down today after ninety seven years? What changed?" Finn asks.
"Who cares? I'm just glad they did. I woke up rotting in a cell, and now I'm spinning in a forest." Octavia says twirling around a branch.
Month shrugs. "Maybe they found something on a satellite, you know, like an old weather satellite or-"
Clarke cuts him off. "It wasn't a satellite. The Ark is dying. At the current population level, there's roughly three months left of life support, maybe four now that we're gone."
Skye nods silently.
The group stops walking. Finn looks at the two sisters. "So that was the secret they locked you up to keep, why they kept you both in solitary, floated your old man?"
Clarke looks at the ground, so Skye speaks up. "Our father was the engineer who discovered the flaw. He thought the people had a right to know. The council disagreed... our mother disagreed. They were afraid it would cause a panic. We were gonna go public, anyway, when Wells..." Skye hesitates.
In a weird way she still loves him. It's been well over a year and half since they broke up, but the pain remains. They've known each other since they were kids. That type of bond doesn't just disappear overnight.
Finn cocks his head. "What, turned in your dad?"
Clarke shrugs it off. "Anyway, the guard showed up before we could. That's why today. That's why it was worth the risk. Even if we all die, at least they bought themselves more time."
"They're gonna kill more people aren't they?" Monty asks.
"Good. After what they did to me, I say, float them all." Octavia says, walking ahead of the group.
They catch up to her and Jasper hoots. "Oh, damn. I love Earth."
Skye looks up to see Octavia stripping down to her underwear. Her jaw drops open.
The guys are practically drooling as Octavia winks at them and jumps into a stream of water.
They all rush forward and look over the small ledge. "Octavia what the hell are you doing?" Clarke shouts.
Monty looks at her. "Octavia... we can't swim."
"I know. But we can stand." She stands up, only waist deep in the water. Droplets cascading down from her hair.
Skye looks down at the map. "Wait. There's not supposed to be a river here."
Finn eyes her, as he unbuckles his belt. "Well, there is, so take off your damn clothes."
She shrugs and begins to remove her shirt along with the others, when Jasper yells out. "Octavia, get out of the water! Get out of the water now!"
They stop and look at the water to see a large snake-like creature headed straight for Octavia. It grabs her, pulling her under as she screams.
"Octavia!" Skye yells.
"What the hell is that? We have to help her." Jasper shouts.
Clarke holds Finn back who was about to jump in. "No. Wait. If we distract it, it might let her go. Help me." The two push a large rock into the water causing a big splash. The snake releases its grip of Octavia, swimming towards the big rock instead.
Skye and Jasper rush down the ledge they're on, yelling for Octavia to get to the shore. Without hesitating, Skye dives into the water, pulling Octavia out seconds before the snake thing can reach them again.
She holds Octavia on the edge of the rock, her leg bloody and scratched. Octavia wraps her arms around Skye, panting. "Thank you. Thank you."
Before she can even react, Octavia pecks her on the cheek. Skye's eyes widen and she glances at Clarke who is just as surprised.
Monty pats the blushing teen on the back. "Note to self, next time, save the girl."
