Deva sat at the front of the class with a hot coffee in between her ring covered fingers.

She took a careful sip with both hands on the cup for warmth as she looked at the door, watching people pile into the classroom.

Her thoughts drifted as she thought back to the first few days of her college experience, comparing it to how it was now.

College wasn't as bad as she thought it would be initially. She thought it would be boring or awkward, just like high school.

That there would be people trying to run down crowded hallways, classrooms were going to be packed to the brim with overly loud boys, and girls who thought they were funny when they talked shit about others.

But in college it was calmer. There were the occasional loud men, and the occasionally childish women, but it wasn't as often, and she loved it that way.

She could handle her own schedule, could eat whenever she wanted to, and could always act whichever way she wanted, although her personality didn't really allow that.

As she watched her classmates walk in, one of them smiled at her when their eyes met for a few seconds and she responded with a small polite smile.

Jake.

Deva didn't have to look to see that he was moving to sit on the row behind her, where he always sat with his friends.

She didn't know him well, but everyone knew his name, he was kind of unavoidable.

He was that guy in the classroom that participated in the discussions and got along well with the teacher.

Deva had two classes with him and in both he was the best student.

Unlike her, who barely lifted her gaze from her hands and was always too distracted by the mood ring that she's had since freshman year of high school.

The only thing I'm good at is writing essays-

She suddenly heard the chair next to her scraping against the ground, making her look up from her coffee cup.

Charles...

He sat towards the back of the class on most days, if he was even there.

He was usually the loudest in the room and most of the time he smelled like weed when he walked into the class. But he wasn't a bad guy, or a bad student.

He was talkative and active, he loved to start random conversations with anyone.

Deva had luckily never had a conversation with him, as she was not the talkative type, but today seemed to be her unlucky day.

"Hey."

"Hi." She greeted quietly as he smiled at her.

"What's your name?"

Deva was a little taken aback at the question, as most people in the class knew her name.

They all knew her as the girl that barely talked and always avoided questions from the professors.

"Deva." She answered softly as she took a sip of her coffee to keep her nerves down.

"Deva, that's a pretty name. My name is Charles." He smirked as he extended his hand for her to shake.

She looked at it for a moment before shaking his hand.

"I know."

She instantly regretted saying that as she didn't want to seem like she was weird, but then again it's not wrong to know your classmate's name.
