"Charles-""You're cheating on me."
Deva didn't know what to say, because she technically was. There was nothing she could truly say to defend herself.
"I'm sorry." She said under her breath as she felt tears come to her eyes.
She never wanted to actually hurt him, and she never thought she would be in such a position. Plus she was planning to break up with him as soon as possible.
But it was still inexcusable.
Jake only sat there, nonchalant as he watched Charles furrow his eyebrows.
"I trusted you, Deva."
Deva didn't say anything as she continued looking down at her hands.
Her gaze was forced up as Charles suddenly gripped Jake's collar.
"Are you fucking smiling?"
Deva's eyes were wide as she watched Jake shrug his shoulders. She was confused as his reaction was not something that she expected.
"How does it feel?"
Deva stared at Jake as he asked this question.
She furrowed her eyebrows for a few seconds as she watched Charles' face turn into anger even more.
"You did all of this just because of that?!"
"Wait!" Deva said just before Charles was going to land a punch on Jake's face.
She had pushed his hand off of Jake's collar in an attempt to stop the fight.
"Deva, don't you realize? He used you to get back at me!" Charles yelled as he pointed at Jake.
Charles was the roommate....
"Jake, is that true?" She questioned quietly as she turned her head to look at him.
Jake stared into her eyes for a few seconds, before nodding his head.
"See?! He's a fucking asshole, I told you that he was no good, and you fucking fell for it."
Deva looked down at her hands, feeling the lump in her throat grow.
But when Charles reached for Jake again, Deva didn't move from her spot in front of him.
"Deva." Charles said with furrowed eyebrows "You're still going to protect him?"
"Just go, Charles." She whispered as she shook her head.
She felt a pain in her chest that had never been there before.
It was almost like there were bricks laying on her chest preventing her from breathing.
She wanted to scream and yell, but only small tears came out of her eyes.
Once Charles left the floor, Deva stood up and grabbed her things from the table, slamming her computer shut and placing it in her bag.
"Deva-"
"No, Jake. It's fine."
"What do you mean it's fine? Dev, I-"
"You got the revenge that you wanted, so there's nothing else I'm useful for anymore." Her voice wavered as she placed her bag over her shoulder and started walking towards the emergency stairs.
"Deva, at least let me explain." Jake begged as he almost jogged behind her.
"Are you going to say that you didn't mean using me? Are you going to say sorry for being a fucking asshole who pretended to like you?"
