Season 3, Episode 4: The Sauna Test

Kassandra's POV

As Jane brushes her teeth, Max and I are left to hang out in her room. I sit on her bed as Max pulls out a bunch of clothes.

"Here we are." Max says turning around. "These'll do for pjs."

I look down and see a long shirt and smooth shorts. I smile at the ginger girl in thanks, before turning away to change.

After I finish changing, I turn back to Max, who is looking anywhere but where I am. I sit back on the bed and our eyes lock.

"So."

"So." I repeat back to her.

Max chews on her lip, the same way she always does when she is nervous about something. She looks around the room and picks up a couple of comics.

I do not know a lot about comics, but Max has quite a few and has shown me some. My favourite is probably Beast Boy from the New Teen Titans comics. Tragic backstory and experimentation that leads to the ability to transform into animals. Very relatable.

"So... Lucas. Want to talk about it?"

Max sighs and looks down. "I wanted to believe in him so much. He's not a bad dude, but this was the straw that broke the camel's back."

I cock my head to the side. "What camel? Is it okay?"

Max chuckles and looks back at me. Her laugh is so soothing, like the babbling of a forest stream, or like rain pitter-pattering on leaves. She takes my hand and feels the rough scraped skin with her impossibly smooth fingers. "Don't worry, it's just a figure of speech. No real camels."

I sigh in relief, but feel the rising heat in my cheeks as my mind registers her holding my hand. I lean against Max's shoulder. I rest my head on her shoulder so she cannot see my blush.

"You know, other times, I'd give him another chance."

"Other times?" I look up at her face and see her looking down into my eyes.

"Ye-Yeah. Not this time though."

"Why not?" My voice barely above a whisper as I feel the urge to lean in.

"Well, I don't like him anymore." Max licks her lips and glances down at my own for just a second.

There is no way she looked at my lips, right? I have seen Mike and Jane do that right before they kiss. Does Max want to kiss me?!?! My brain travels a million miles per hour. I am too deep in my thoughts, I barely hear her next words.

"There's someone else I like. Someone I think I've liked longer than Lucas." Max slowly starts to lean down towards me.

I give in to the urge and start to lean up towards her too. My whole body strains with restraint, trying to hold myself back from jumping straight up. "Who is it?"

Max's eyes twinkle like sun rays catching a wave at just the right moment. "Someone I should have realized I liked a long time ago. Someone who was always there for me. Someone who got to know me for me and wanted to learn everything about me. Someone who made me want to be the best I could be for her."

Our lips hover, less than half an inch separating us. "Max, I—"

The door to the bathroom opens and we burst apart from each other. I dive to the floor, grabbing a comic book and opening it to a random page, before looking up to see who just entered. Max, having done a similar action but on the bed, also looks up.

Standing at the doorway was Jane. The pajamas Max lent her hang loosely on her. She gives us questioning looks, before shrugging and sitting on the bed.
