Season 4, Chapter 3: The Monster and The Superhero

Max's POV

The next day, we pick some food up for Eddie, before meeting him back at Reefer Rick's boat house. Dustin opens the door with a loud bang, scaring Eddie. We lift our grocery bags.

"Delivery service." Dustin says, proud of himself.

Eddie takes a moment to calm himself, before starting to dig into the food we got him. He grabs a box of honey comb cereal and sits in the canoe. As he's stuffing his face full of cereal, we tell him the situation outside.

"So we got, uh, some good news and some bad news." Dustin says. "How do you prefer it?

"Bad news first, always." Eddie says, taking a swig of beer.

"All right. Bad news." Dustin says. "We tapped into the Hawkins PD dispatch with our Cerebro, and they're definitely looking for you. Also, they're, uh, pretty convinced you killed Chrissy."

"Like 100% kind of convinced," I say.

"And the good news?" Eddie asks.

"Your name hasn't gone public yet," Robin says very quickly. "But if we found out about you, it's a matter of time before others do too. And once that gets out, everyone and their shallow-minded mother is gonna be gunning for you."

"Hunt the freak, right?" Eddie says bitterly, yet also sadly.

"Exactly." Robin confirms.

I feel for him. If anyone found out that I'm in love with Kassie, I'd be the freak they hunt. I pause. Did I just say in love? Am I in love with Kassie? Oh God, I think I am.

"Shit." Eddie and I curse.

"So, before that happens, we need to find Vecna, kill him, and prove your innocence." Dustin says.

"That's all, Dustin? That's all?" Eddie asks sarcastically.

Dustin, innocent in the ways of communication, does not see the sarcasm. "Yeah, no that's pretty much it."

Robin jumps in to save the poor boy. "Listen, Eddie, I know everything Dustin is saying sounds totally delusional, but we've actually been through this kind of thing before. I mean, they have a--a few times, and--and I have once. Mine was more human-flesh-based, theirs was more smoke-related, but bottom line is, collectively, I really feel like we got this."

"Yeah," Steve adds, "we usually rely on these two girls who have super powers, but, uh, one of theirs went bye-bye, and they're both on the other side of the country, so--"

Robin cuts him off. "So we're technically in more of the--"

"Kinda.."

"Brainstorming phase." I finish.

"Brainstorming." Steve snaps his fingers.

"There--There's nothing to worry about." Dustin sputters.

Steve scoffs, trying to show that we are definitely not worried. It failed. Eddie gives the two boys a look of shocked disbelief.

In the silence, we hear sirens coming.

"Shit." Steve whispers.

"Tarp." Robin says. "Tarp. Tarp."

Eddie lies down and pulls the tarp over himself. The rest of us, stand up and head to the windows. The sirens are now wailing very loudly as police cars and an ambulance drive by, not even slowing down at Reefer Rick's.

We get in Steve's car and follow them. When we arrive, we can see a crime scene in the middle of the road. And right in front of it all is Nancy, being interviewed by Chief Powell. We get out of the car and she sees us. She subtly waves.
