"he's stable. he's stable," doctor cordova states. "what is he injected with?" she asks, looking at persephone and i.

"we don't know. it was some vial," seph tells her.

"what you are saying to me, sounds insane," doctor cordova says, walking back over to soraya. we all follow, leaving gray hooked up to a heart monitor on his own bed.

"it's the truth. we're not lying," i stress to her.

"i was kidnapped. the government did torture me," alex tries to convince her too.

"i'm all for not believing in the government, but this sounds made up; like some fantasy story."

"can you take one second to look around the hospital? do you see what's going on? that's made up?!" seph questions.

"that's different!"

"it's the same! they're being framed for something they never done," matt tells her.

"i'm staying out of it. i'll help but afterward you leave this hospital and me alone. i don't want to be involved."

"no problem," seph mutters.

i pay attention as she begins to show up soraya's wound.

i can't believe dominic stabbed her! who even was that dominic? how could he do that so easily? soraya made it seem like she's known dominic for forever; like they have a connection. so why would he stab her? why would he change?

this is why i'm glad soraya's going to be okay. i can get more information from her.

"when i'm done, grayson needs to stay on that medicine for some while. without a blood test, it's hard to determine his toxicology. the meds stabilize his brain for right now. he'll hopefully, eventually wake up. by then he'll need a lot of fluids. we have saline bags i can give you," doctor cordova explains. "he looks to be overdosing, so keep an eye on his breathing and when- or if- he starts to seize again, turn him on his side."

"it'd be great if you come with us, we could use your help," i suggest, "grayson can die if we do something wrong."

"i'm not involving myself in your affairs. you all probably have something to do with what's happening outside," she states, stopping her sowing, looking up at us.

"what's it going to take to make you believe us?" i ask. "what reason would we need to lie about starting or not starting the virus? wouldn't we be happy about the events that are playing out? maybe- speaking in general- all of families are probably dead. why would we be happy about that? we only have each other in this room. we didn't even know each other until a few days ago. we need help doctor."

"i'm giving you my help right now. i'm done after this. there's no reason for me to join up with you. the government is after you too? i enjoy my life, thank you very much."

i roll my eyes and she goes to wipe her nose on her shoulder.

fresh, bright red blood smears on her coat.

"no..." i whisper.

doctor cordova wipes at her eyes and blood smears on her face.

"no! NO!" she shrieks.

all of us are silent as doctor calian cordova begins to exhibit the symptoms of max20.

she falls to her knees, then to her side, gasping for air.

"fuck!" matt curses.

i kneel next to her, moving her hair out of her face.

"thank you so much for your help," i tell her. "whether you believed us or not, we appreciate everything you did for us. we needed it so much."

she gasps, eyes wide in shock.

"june," seph calls me, but i can't look away.

i watch doctor cordova struggle to gain oxygen until finally, she gives her last breath, her body falling still and limp.

it's silent.

what are we going to do?

"FUCK!" matt repeats, hitting the wall.

"what are we going to do?" alex asks, rubbing his hands over his shaven head.

"we have to do it ourselves," seph says.

"we have two unconscious people in front of us and none of us are doctors," matt says.

i close doctor cordova's eyes and stand up.

"she told us what we needed to know," i state, "we finish sowing ray up, and we hope for them to wake up. after that, we find apple and we really find out what the hell is going on with our powers."

"won't we need dom?" alex asks.

"ray will know what to do," i nod. "she'll be okay. doctor cordova gave us pain meds for her when she's up and running. it's up to her body to heal."

"so, who's going to finish sowing up ray?"

we all share looks, no one jumping to do the task.

"okay, i'll do it," i speak up.
