"so, since we've kind of gotten to know each other, has anyone felt that they could've been harboring powers while growing up?" i question to the car, peering into the rearview mirror to see everyone in the back. "before some of you doze off."
"hmm, not really," juniper says. "people didn't understand me growing up. but isn't that everyone? who feels misunderstood?"
"i felt the same. misunderstood," alex says, "but juniper is right, isn't that everyone?"
"really dig deep. anything out of your childhood that felt like you were immensely different than the people around you?" i ask.
"what about you ray? anything?" alex asks me.
"i always felt like an outcast. maybe it was more than a misunderstanding from the people around you. what if we were always different from everyone. even persephone and gray. you guys were shunned out too right?"
"people used to bully me and my twin, ethan" gray says, "but i just thought it was the way life is. everyone goes through something."
"maybe it's more. guys, gray saw his brother in his mini coma. i saw alex's mom. the both of them said something similar to the both of us. alex's mom said something is missing other than apple. that we're supposed to be finding something. and gray's brother told him that something big is coming. big and beautiful he said. if we want to talk about origin, then maybe it starts at the beginning of us."
"big and beautiful? like what?" june asks.
"i wish i knew. but that's what we're supposed to find out right?"
"so do we rule out the government then?" she asks. "if they have nothing to do with why we are the way we are, then what's left after that? because i can only think that we're not human."
"we are june," seph tells her.
"but she has a point," matt speaks up.
"yeah, if the government just wants to experiment on us, would that make us not from here?" alex asks.
"i've never ruled out an evil scientist, or rogue doctor. injecting us with whatever concoction when we were born," i throw out there, "but the more we talk about why we are the way we are, it brings up more theories and questions," i sigh, wondering why i even brought this up in the first place.
"we're human because we have memories of growing up with our unforgettable parents and the environments of students and teachers and life. it is a possibility that you could've been living with this and never knew, and there's a possibility that it could've been done previous with no memory of it happening. but we won't know. and ray is right. because we have no other idea of what's going on, meddling on it with no viable direction won't help," seph says, "we'll drive ourselves insane with the what if's and why's."
"why though," i say. "why? why? why? why us? why are we the chosen ones?"
"and what are we supposed to do?" alex asks. "if we're chosen, then what do we do with the powers we have? because i have no clue what to do with mine."
"seriously," i agree.
"maybe we'll get the answers we need soon. but seriously guys. let's just chill out," seph says.
"alright," i nod.
are we good?
evil?
what is this?
and why can dom and i "activate" everyone else's powers?!
okay.
ray.
