⏪️ REW.soraya stops and i do too.
superspeed is like a gust of wind... but running. i can move so far in just one step.
"what's up?" i ask concerned, wondering why she stopped.
she points to a sign that reads 'welcome to alabama'.
"we made it to alabama!" she grins. "that felt like a millisecond!"
i smile at her elevated mood.
"it felt like we took a step and now we're here," i agree.
"why can't persephone, matt and gray have powers? we'd get to mexico in no time," she says.
"we could try to twilight it?" i chuckle.
"yeah, but what if they can't go the speed we can? i don't want to kill anyone."
true. what a horrible death.
"smart thinking," i tell her. "how's your wound?"
"it's okay. i can feel a little pain but it's small. i'm mostly ignoring it."
"here," i say, shrugging the backpack off, "drink some water. stay hydrated."
i unzip the bag and grab a water. i hand it out to ray.
"thank you," she says, popping it open and taking a gulp.
i take a long sip of my own water, drinking more than half of the bottle before dropping it back in the bag. soraya holds hers back out to me.
"drink a little more," i insist.
she groans, frowning at how i won't take her bottle. but she obeys me, taking a long sip as well. she passes the bottle to me and i take it, satisfied with her intake.
i toss her water back in and stand, shouldering the backpack again.
"we are here to find a dispensary alex."
"well let's get a move on."
"gray is so worried," she says, shaking her head as we walk along the road.
"well he, and you, and i, almost died. apple and dom are with ann. and we're in alabama looking for marijuana. i can see his concern," i tell her.
"yeah, but i need a minute, because i was stabbed. i have to wrap my head around this. i move and i hurt. i step and i hurt. i just want one moment before we have to jump into another fight with ann. georgia constantly gave me battles. i just want normal. for one second. that's it."
"and what if normal isn't our normal? what if it's not meant for us? we're superheroes."
"see! responsibility that i didn't ask for. i didn't ask to have powers," she frowns.
"yeah, but you have them. doesn't change," i shrug.
we have to live with this now. she can't just say she doesn't want it and it happens.
"i know alex," she monotones.
"i'm just saying," i chuckle.
"a normal life. is that too hard to obtain? i want apple back, running through fields, bringing dead flowers back to life."
"she can do that?!"
"she'll amaze you alex! she can turn invisible; even her surroundings if she focuses hard enough. i thought i could protect her. i didn't want her on the battlefield with us. she's seven. she's seven, and i failed her."
"no. you did everything you could for my sister. i knew that when she called for help and pleaded for you. not dominic. not me. but you. and i know right now she's rooting for you to find and save her. thank you for being there for her when dom and i weren't. you've done so much for her. thank you."
i have to keep thanking her.
ray was all apple had and she stepped up for her.
for my family.
"you don't need to thank me. anyone else who had the privilege to meet your little sister would've done everything they could've for her. she's special; before the powers. i saw in her someone i wanted to be at her age."
"she is definitely something. i miss her so much."
"i do too. come on. let's try and get further in."
she holds her hand out and i take it, a course of electricity humming through our touch.
i look at soraya as she stares forward, stretching her legs.
"okay. let's go."
i squeeze her hand and we take off.
