EXHAUSTION. It coursed through me as we charged through the rain-drenched forest, the sound of our boots squelching in the mud drowned out by the relentless downpour. The creature we pursued was faster—too fast. Its silhouette vanished into the stormy shadows, leaving us behind. The bitter sting of failure hung in the air as I doubled over, panting.
"The monster's human" Wednesday announced suddenly, her voice cutting through the rain. She crouched, pointing at tracks etched in the muddy ground.
"What the hell are you doing?" Xavier's sharp voice startled me, making me stumble back.
"Holy shit, how about a warning next time, brother!" I groaned, clutching my chest. A small, infuriating smile flickered on his face.
"We were following the monster" Wednesday stated as she stood, unfazed.
"You saw it? It's here?" Xavier's gaze darted around the clearing, scanning for danger. "Do you have a death wish or something?"
"What exactly are you doing here?" she asked, narrowing her eyes.
"I overheard you mention the old meeting house. Lucky I showed up when I did" he replied casually.
"Right, because you were totally going to save us from the big-ass creature with giant claws" I muttered, rolling my eyes.
Wednesday ignored me, her voice calm but focused. "We learned one thing. The monster is human. Its tracks shifted—from claws to footprints."
"Show me" Xavier demanded. But when we turned back, the tracks had vanished beneath pooling rainwater.
"The rain washed them away" I sighed, my frustration mounting.
"I know what we saw" Wednesday insisted, fixing Xavier with a sharp look.
"I'm trying to keep an open mind" he replied evenly.
"How big of you" she muttered, brushing past him as we trudged beneath his umbrella. Or rather, they did—I was relegated to the edges, catching only sparse drops of shelter.
"I do think you might be right about Rowan" Xavier offered, breaking the tense silence.
"Why the sudden change of heart?" Wednesday asked, her curiosity piqued.
"I texted him again today. Said we could meet over spring break and go snowboarding, like last year. This time, he texted right back. Said he wouldn't make it."
"Only you never went snowboarding last year" I pointed out with a smirk. "Shocked you thought of that, brother."
Xavier rolled his eyes but continued, his tone softening. "Part of me wanted to blame his recent weirdness. I didn't want to believe something bad had happened."
