Mourning
'He saw you and saw a queen' - Lyra
• Persephone •
I awoke to the morning rays of the underworld through the window, before a swarm of ladies came rushing through the door before me
Rummaging through garments and drawers, fussing to themselves as I sat here in bed confused"Lady Persephone, good morning" one of the ladies said, bowing her head to me, followed by the rest of the women
Lady?
I was no lady to them. I was a mere goddess that lived in a small cottage. And they bowed there heads to me? Bowed respect to me, what for?
"If you shall rise my lady, we will get you dressed" she spoke once more, eager eyes all burning through mine as they stood patiently. ExpectantlyI slowly got up from the sheets, cautious of the night gown that stopped by my thighs as I stood before these women
But they paid no mind to my state.Merely ushered me forward as they began talking amongst themselves, dressing me as I stood bewildered at them
Before I was sat into a chair, my locks being pulled back by someone as jewellery was placed upon me."We will leave you my lady, Lord Hades has requested your presences in the dining hall" one woman spoke, before the door shut and I was left in silence
A silence that shocked my mind back into motion
And I stood up, heading towards the mirror to look at what these women had done to me.And I stopped. Stunned once again as I looked at myself
I looked... differentI had a dress that seemed... fit for royalty
Hair pulled back into an intricate design adorned with flowers and jewels.
Stones rested on my neck and shone with every movement I made.I looked what people would call beautiful. Covered in gems and threads I had never even encountered before.
Things I had dreamed of in my bedroom when my mother would plait my hair.
When I would pull the cotton white fabric over my body and look... plain.I cautiously made my way into the corridor
The unlocked door struck some sort of fear into me
That I was not supposed to be out alone
I retraced my steps from the day before, and found Hades where he had been, sat at the table alone. But he did not move, did not flinch at the sound of my shoes
Shoes I was not used to
I was barefoot for most of my existence, at one with the earth and the dirt, the flowers and the water.Just as I think he was used to being alone.
The silence did not seem to drown him as it had done me.
"Hades" I said simply, waiting for his gaze
He looked up almost immediately, two black pits of emptiness looking over my figure, before they connected with mine
"You look beautiful" he said
"Thank you" I said, accepting the compliment.
