Her birthday shot round in a flash, she was 27 today and for the life of her she didn't understand why it made her feel much older than she was. When she was younger she had this plan in her head. She was sure she would meet someone by the time she was 18, like some rom com, a childhood sweetheart who would confess his undying love for her on the last of school and they would fall madly in love with one another, together forever.
However, her crush on the class clown Nicholas hadn't become anything, even though she fancied the pants of him, wrote his surname against hers and did the age-old love quiz of his name and hers with the word loves in the middle. He ended up shagging Jenna Mckenna, the school bicycle and Sophia swore to never fall in love again, although that was short lived.
She thought she would be engaged by 22, married by 23, living in a big house in the countryside. The type of house she would see on the drive down to her aunt and uncle's, those big houses, with gated entrances, driveways that stretched for miles and no neighbours. She would have a Range Rover and a handbag dog, and she would wear all the nicest clothes, not some designer knockoffs her mum got for her from the market but the real things.
She would have her first child at 24 and her second at 26, a boy and then a girl, so her son could look after her daughter, they would be carbon copies of her and her husband. She would be the coolest mum around, all the dads would fancy her, and the women would be jealous, she would have it all.
However, after she left school it was like reality hit. She didn't want those things that her 13–14-year-old self wanted. She was nowhere near old enough to be having a kid at 24, she was barely able to keep herself alive at times. And as for settling down, she didn't like the idea of being tied to someone forever if they weren't right. She had seen it happen with her friends, being in unhappy relationships in their early 20's wasting the best years of their life.
As she had gotten older she realised the materialistic and superficial things meant nothing to her too. She didn't care about the latest clothes trends; she couldn't care less about being wanted by those who looked at her and if anything, she had grown to appreciate all the little things she had in her life. Like her amazing friends, her incredible job, and the way she had gotten to this place off her own merit.
However, with this new age, this new year, she did feel that feeling that maybe now it was time to be looking for something more. A little bit more than a meal for one on a Friday night, a little more than a cheeky hook up when she was in the mood, a little more than planning events alone. She thought maybe she wanted to open herself to a little bit more.
