Chapter 5: Nico

I yelled at Will. I needed to leave camp. I needed to leave him and his beautiful golden hair, and that-

Stop Nico!

I shadow traveled out of the room. And of course I ran into Jason.

"Hey Nico, what's- Nico, are you crying?"

"No," I said, but Jason knew it wasn't true.

"What's the matter?" He asked.

My legs gave out from the exhaustion of shadow traveling.

Jason carried me to my cabin.

"Nico, you are going to tell me what's happening right now," he demanded.

So I told him. All of it. Even the crush on Will. I was crying the whole time.

"Nico, don't leave camp. We would miss you too much," he said. "Will would miss you." He laughed.

I laid there crying. "None of that is true," he told me. "None of it. Now, let's get you back to the infirmary. It's your last day."

I wiped the tears from my eyes, and we walked to the infirmary. "Hey Nico?" I looked up at Jason. "If you ever need someone to talk with, I'm here."

Jason left, and Will came rushing in. "I thought I lost you!" He yelled. "And you shadow traveled out of the room. I could only think you might be dead."

"Thanks for the concern, sunshine."

"Never scare me like that again."

"Okay, okay. Hold on. You were scared?"

"Of course I was scared."

I laughed.

"Now, sit down. I need to check if your wounds have reopened from shadow travel. Capture the flag is in an hour, and I can't have you wounded," Will said.

I took off my shirt and he examined my back.

"Just a few scabs reopened. Your werewolf scratches are okay," he informed me.

"Thanks," was all I could say.

"We should go over the plans for capture the flag. Come with me to my cabin."

We walked to his cabin. Many people were there, and I wanted to get away. But Will just dragged me in anyways.

Kayla spoke up. "We are teamed up with the Poseidon, Hades, Hermes, Athena, Demeter, and Hephaestus cabins. Annabeth, tell them the plan."

Annabeth stood up. "The Hermes, Apollo, and Demeter cabins will go out to the battlefield and attack the others. The Hephaestus cabin will guard the flag, while only Nico and Will will shadow travel to the flag. After Nico shadow travels, Will will drag him over to the trees out of sight so he can rest, and then grab the flag and run it across the boundary line. The Athena cabin will be setting up traps. Percy, stay by the lake close to the flag. Any concerns?"

No one spoke up. It was a perfect plan. Except I was a big part. If I messed up, we would lose. It would be my fault.

Will put his hand on my shoulder. "If you're not up to it, you don't have to do it. You might pass out, or," he lowered his voice, "You could die."

"I'll be fine. I shadow traveled hundreds of miles with a fifty foot statue, a satyr, and another person. I can shadow travel you a few hundred feet."

"Okay. Just making sure."

Finally, it was time for Capture the flag. We put the flag in place.

"Do your jobs," Annabeth said.

Will and I ran to get sort of close to the other flag. Once we were pretty close, I held out my hand for Will to take. He took it, and I tried not to think too much about it. I imagined where I wanted to go, and the shadows took us.

We were even closer to the flag. I toppled over, too exhausted to stand. Will dragged me to a tree and sat me up. I fell asleep.

And of course, I had a nightmare.

Will was in front of me, smiling. Then Bianca showed up, and stabbed a knife through his heart. Will's eyes rolled up in his head, and he was dead. I refused to cry. "This is just a nightmare," I told myself. "Just a nightmare."

Then all of my closest friends were there. They all died.

"Just a nightmare," I told myself again.

I saw myself. Then I died.

"Just a nightmare," I repeated.

The nightmare was trying its hardest to scare me, but I wouldn't let it. I would not let it.

I smiled then shouted to the nothingness, "You don't scare me! You never will!"

I woke up to Will smiling at me.
