Kara's POV

Two years. 

It has been two years since I landed on earth and lost my entire race of people. 

Earth sucks. Everything is boring and dull compared to Krypton and everyone is an idiot on this planet and it is so backward in its beliefs. 

I am laying with my head resting on my table because I was exhausted from all the loud noises at lunch. It was my first day back in school since the summer break and I forgot how horrible large crowds could be. 

I hear the scrape of a chair next to me as someone plops down next to me. 

After a couple of seconds, the ruffling stopped as the person pulled out their supplies. 

"You look like you had a rough day." I look at the person sitting next to me who said it with a frown. Our town and this high school were small and shockingly I didn't recognize this girl. Even though I had only been here for two years I thought I knew everyone. "It's only the first day of school it can't have been that bad" I huff and go back to facing my desk not caring to respond. "I am Lena. I am new here. I like Midvale it's very pretty." I didn't recognize where her accent was from but Alex had explained that people from different parts of the world had different accents. My English still wasn't great so talking much wasn't my speed yet but thankfully I don't have much of an accent. "I just moved here from a small town in Ireland so I really don't mind the whole small-town issue it's just I miss the food back home it was much better." she paused "You don't talk much do you?" 

I shake my head and continue to ignore her until thankfully the teacher walks in and starts speaking about the class. 

I peek at my phone and see a text from Eliza in a group chat with Alex and Jerimiah but also to me individually. 

Eliza Sent in Group chat

What does everyone want for dinner?

Eliza to Kara D. 

I got the sauce that you said tasted like home and I was gonna use it with chicken so you can bring it for lunch this week to school. 

Also, I messaged Clark and told him he needs to spend time with you.

Kara D. to Eliza 

Thank you, Eliza

I knew that Eliza was trying to be considerate but I really wished my cousin, literally the only family I had left wanted to spend time with me instead of being forced into it.

"Get off your phone" Lena whispers.

I glare at her and whisper "Don't tell me what to do." 

But I hear a throat clear behind me "Mrs. Danvers in the future if I see you on your phone I will take it away, for now, put it away. Now class spends\ the rest of the class getting to know your desk partner you will be sitting with each other for the year." 

I go back to looking at my desk properly annoyed. 

"I tried to warn you" 

"Leave me alone. Have I not made it abundantly clear that I don't want to talk by ignoring you this entire period?" It came out harsher than I meant but I really didn't feel like dealing with this girl. 

"What crawled up your butt and died?" I continue ignoring her and she says "We are stuck next to each other you should tell me your name at a minimum" 

I pause for a second before relenting "Kara. My name is Kara." 

"Nice to meet you, Kara. I am Lena" 

"You already said that." 

She raised an eyebrow at me and says "Seriously what crawled up your butt and died? Angst incarnate? Spite? Frustration?"

"And what crawled up your's pure sunshine? Not everyone's lives are perfect and loves everything" 

"Neither is mine but I don't treat people like a bitch because of it. I treat people with respect especially since I know what it's like to not be treated that way." 

"I-" The bell rings before I can continue and Lena packs up her bag and leaves before I can respond.

The next week Lena sits down next to me when I am in a similar position of trying to shut out the noise from the rest of the world. There was a fire three towns over, and a child crying for her bottle, and -

"Boo," Lena says scaring the shit out of me and nearly knocking me off of my chair. 

"Where a bell or something Jesus Lena," I say holding a hand to my heart. "Or please don't. Bells are way too loud" 

I see Lena start to say something but pause and start digging through her bag. A second later she pulls out a small circular box. 

"Here" she tosses them to me. 

"What is this?" I open the box and find two small earbuds. 

"Sound-canceling headphones" I raise an eyebrow confused still, "I notice you always flinch when the bell rings or there is a sudden loud noise. You can't wear them in class but in between and it may help." 

"What's the catch?" I question. "Nothing is free so what's the catch" 

"Be nicer to people." 

"What?" 

"Be nicer to people, and me. You just assume everyone is going to be a bitch and not everyone is that way. I mean if I am ever that jaded I want someone to give me a wake-up call and so I am trying to pay it forward or some bullshit."
