Emrie
It's currently nine o'clock, and we were sitting in the living room talking about anything, waiting for midnight.
"So, who has the fastest record for completing the record," I asked. "If I remember correctly, it was Zhana," she said while taking a from her cup.
"You get three nights and two days. During that time, you are not to be in the cabin, but you can be around it," she started, "Zhana spent the whole day sitting on the porch until sundown, then she left," she said.
"Eight hours later, she came back saying she was done," she laughed.
"Of course, I couldn't let her in, so she camped outside," she laughed.
Zhana is the fastest?
"She was so confident when she stepped into the woods," Malina said with a slight smile. "I'm so proud of her, still am," she sighed.
Malina seemed to have a faraway look in her eyes as she remembered my sister's hunt, seeming at peace.
"Well, I'm heading in for the night," she said as she stood up. Phara and I responded with Good nights as she disappeared around the corner.
Phara stood up and walked to me. She didn't say anything and plopped herself on my lap. We sat silently, listening to sounds that came from outside. "Are you scared," Phara asked after a while.
I wrapped my arms around her and laid my head on her shoulder. I sighed heavily and replied, "A little bit, but I'll be fine." She sighed and laid her head back on my shoulder. My anxiety was through the rough, but listening to the crickets and looking out the window was slightly comforting.
The wind howled as the trees danced to a song only they could hear. I continued looking out the window to see something moving in the distance. Then, it stopped and directed its eyes towards the window.
It stared at me, never blinking, and walked away. I couldn't see what it was, but we were in the woods. It could've been anything. Soft snores snatched my attention away from the window. I looked down at Phara to see she had gone to sleep.
Slightly chuckling, I gently picked her up and went to the room she would be in while I was away. I gently laid Phara down and tried to untangle myself from her. I lay down with her and closed my eyes.
I had two hours left to sleep, but I couldn't. The hunt kept etching its way back into my mind. It starts at 00:00 and ends at 00:00.
Before I knew it, my eyes opened at exactly midnight. I released myself from Phara and got dressed. I grabbed the rifle Malina had out for me and left the cabin.
It was waiting for me.
While asleep, a humming sound, more like whistling, was etched into my mind. As soon as I stepped outside, I heard the same sound.
Looking up, I saw a beam of light coming from the moon. "I should probably follow," I said to myself.
I think I'll go high since I don't know exactly what I'm looking for. Most likely couldn't fly.
I wrapped the rifle's strap around me and climbed the nearest tree. I turned around to take one last look at the house to see Malina. She had one hand over her mouth and the other on her chest.
She looked like she was crying. Hoping to ease her a little, I lightly waved. Her body jerked as she waved back.
Turning around, I started jumping from tree to tree in the direction the moon led me. I'm glad I packed leather gloves. I probably would have a splinter by now.
