One week had turned into two, two weeks turned into a month, and one month turned into two and a half months since we had seen or heard from Jun and Sila. It was now the end of February.

Even Rebecca was M.I.A., but when she did come, she always said, "I'm only here to see my sweet cheeks."

Horrible pet name.

In the meantime, Malina had taught me some spells and explained how to gather mana, which Phara kindly helped me with without knowing.

She explained that if we ran out of mana completely, we would first release an aphrodisiac smell that drives any person crazy. If we were still empty afterward, we would fall into a deep slumber until enough mana had regenerated.

This made me think Malina didn't have tumbleweeds, but she did. You don't need to feel pleasure to receive mana from the other person.

She still forbade me from going home, too. It's weird how I haven't gotten a call from my parents the entire time.

I would be lying if I said I missed them. My house was like Toy Story, only smiling for Andy or whoever the kid was.

"What's on your mind?"

"Just random stuff," I sighed and sat on the ground. "Malina, what's going on," I asked the same question I had been asking for two and a half months.

She sighed and sat in front of me. "To be frank, Emrie, I'm still trying to figure out what's going on myself," she started, sitting beside me.

"I know your necklace isn't a family heirloom," she started. With each breath she drew, she continued to hesitate to tell me. "Then what is it," I asked. I was getting tired of the suspense when she didn't finish.

"It's like a barrier that keeps you from using your full potential, and only the person that placed it on you can take it off."

"Emrie, that necklace could have gotten you killed," she finally looked at me.

"But you're stronger than they thought," she said, hinting at the cracks.

"My parents would never do that," I bit back. My parents might be twisted behind closed doors when Zhana wasn't around, but they loved me.

Didn't they?

Didn't they?

I shook my head to get the thoughts out of my head.

She didn't answer. She just gave that same smile she always gave when we were on the topic.

She placed her hand on mine and kissed my forehead. "I know everything isn't so extravagant right now, but please bear with me, okay," she said, kissing my forehead again. "I feel like you're going to make me wait until I graduate," I chuckled.

It was a lame attempt, but it was the best I could do to try lifting the air that had surrounded us. The truth is, Malina had figured out what was going on already but wasn't telling me. I know she has my best in mind, but I still deserve to know.

"Alright, cast three more incantations and keep them steady, then you can go home," she said after a while. "And it can't be ino." Ino was the first spell I had ever cast, and it was a quick flame. As soon as it came, it was gone.

I was pretty sure I was depleted of mana, but apparently not.

I got up, dusted my butt off, and cast the first spell.

"Inostroda!" This was an infernal flame. It lasted longer than the flame from Ino and it was hotter. The spell lasted for half a minute before I released it. I hissed as my hands burned, but not a wound in sight.
