"Wand up Dawn, you will never be able to cast well with your wand pointed downwards." Lena shouts as she leans against the jobberknoll tree with crossed arms. She spent the majority of her afternoon training with Dawn, he was struggling to recreate the same surge of magic he was able to achieve that night by the cottage and he was slowly losing his patience.
She understood Dawns frustration though, it wasn't easy magic to work with but she told him she would help him find a way to work with it but it wasn't easy. She wished Professor Fig was there, he always knew where to start.
"Perhaps I was wrong and I'm not cut out for this type of magic." He muttered as he watches his wand sputter with blue sparks.
"It's been a few days since you practiced last, don't be so hard on yourself."
"Alright."
"Remember, hold your wand firm, breathe steady and concentrate on your target... try it again." She instructs, tilting her head slightly.
Dawn took a deep breath and readjusted himself before flicking his wand at the target again, this time he was able to conjure a beam of magic but it shot out and bounced off the target towards Lena.
"Protego!" She shouts, stumbling slightly from the blast.
"Alright, I've had enough. Can I be done for today?" Dawn growls as he threw his wand into the snow.
"Yes, thats probably not a bad idea." She replied as she watched him snatch up his wand and the two took a seat on the rocks by the tree.
"I'm sorry I almost hit you with that last one there..." he muttered.
"Don't be, it happens to the best of us."
"Was it difficult for you at first as well?"
"In my own way yes. Everything takes time and practice." She says, tucking her cold nose under her scarf.
The two were silent for a long moment as they watched the orange glow from the afternoon sun wash over the snowy landscape.
"So... you and Poppy?" She asks, attempting to lighten the mood.
"What about us?"
"Well... how did things go? It's been a couple days since we last spoke, I'm curious."
"Well, better than I expected. I was worried she would be mad but she wasn't."
"She's not one to get mad... but I have to ask.. how did you even come to be in that situation with her in the first place?"
"One morning I was out exploring the forest when I got stuck in a trap. I couldn't shift back and was trapped there for a few hours before Poppy came by." He begins as he twirled his wand around in his fingers.
"Initially I thought she was just going to leave me there, but she didn't. She helped me out and sat with me for awhile and before she left she told me she would come back to see me... so I also came back... then it became an everyday thing and with no one to talk to at this new school, in this new place... it was nice to have a friend."
Lena smiled, she had forgotten that Dawn was kind of in the same position she was in when she started in her fifth year. A new student who came to the school late, it wasn't always easy to fit in right away but she was glad he was becoming a part of the group.
"Poppy is a good friend to have, I'm grateful for our friendship... she feels like the sister I never had." Lena says with a smile as she watched two jobberknolls soar above them.
"You're a good friend to have too." He says, giving her a soft smile.
"Sometimes I don't think I am..." she whispers.
