It was the day of the recital. It was early in the day, yet the siblings were awake. Mari had gotten her little brother up to practice more.
Sunny had gotten better at the violin very quickly in such a short amount of time, it was surprising. But he was still struggling slightly. Mari wanted to use the time they had to practice more.
In the piano room, the two practiced diligently. Mari was so focused, she hadn't noticed her brother's rising frustration.
"Sunny, that was the wrong note. You keep doing this every time. Let's start again." She said. She kept her eyes on the piano keys ready to play again when her brother rushed out of the room.
"Wh- Sunny! Where are you going!?" She shouts in frustration. As Mari stood up, she heard the loud sound of cracking and splintering wood. She rushes out of the room.
And lo and behold, there was the violin, smashed to pieces. Anger boiled up inside Mari's chest. "Sunny! What have you done!? Do you know how expensive that was!?" She shouts up at him.
The boy stood at the top of the stairs, looking down at what he'd done. Mari couldn't see his face as she climbed up the stairs. "Why would you do that!? Why Sunny!?" She yelled once at the top.
Her eyes wouldn't focus. "If you didn't want to play it, all you had to do was say so! Not destroy it!" Sunny wouldn't respond, he was hyperventilating. "Say something! Tell me why you thought that was a good idea!"
Suddenly, Sunny moved and she was falling. He pushed her. She was falling down the stairs.
Everything seemed like it was in slow motion, she closed her eyes. So this is how she dies, huh?
She waits for the inevitable impact with the floor. But, it never comes. There was a pain in her arm. Slowly, she opens her eyes. They widen significantly.
Sunny caught her.
He wore an expression she'd never seen on him. He looked terrified. Slowly, he pulled her away from the stairs. They both collapse on the ground.
Sunny began crying, he kept apologizing over and over. Mari felt horrible. She pulls her brother close, hugging him. "It's okay Sunny. I'm the one who should be sorry. I pushed you too far, didn't I?" She muttered.
Sunny hugged her tightly, sobbing his poor little eyes out. "It's okay… it's okay… you're okay."
