Mason seemed to pop up almost every day at the same time, but it wasn't always at Lamson's, sometimes it was at the drugstore. He liked being around Giselle, and Giselle liked being around him. The problem was, Giselle still hadn't told any of her family that she had gotten this new friend; a friend that could potentially be more than a friend one day.
After almost a third week of seeing Mason around the grocery store when Giselle showed up for lunch, Gilbert couldn't take it anymore. He wasn't happy that the man seemed to be infatuated with his sister. Her last boyfriend was a total dud, and he refused for her to go through something like that again.
When he rung up the sandwiches, Gilbert stuck a note to the package of Mason's. He hoped his sister didn't see it, but even if she did, he didn't care, he had to speak with the man. He had to get it through the man's head that Giselle was off limits to everyone in the town. The note read:
"Stay behind when G leaves. We need to talk."
Mason simply crumpled the note and stuck it in his pocket, since he knew Gilbert didn't want Giselle to see it. He didn't know what Gilbert wanted to talk about, but he knew the man wanted to keep it a secret. The moment Giselle left, Gilbert gave Arnie a simple little task to do so he could speak to Mason without Arnie trying to hear everything, and possibly repeat it to Giselle.
"What'd you need?" Mason asked, as he leaned against the side of the counter.
"Look, man, I know G is pretty, I get that, but she's my twin sister. I just wanted to let you know that she's off limits. Every guy in this town knows that, but I guess you haven't heard anything about that rule yet." Gilbert commented, causing Mason to raise his eyebrows in surprise.
"She's off limits?" Mason questioned,"but isn't she over twenty years old?" He asked, and Gilbert nodded.
"Yes, but that doesn't matter. She's still off limits." Gilbert replied, making Mason scoff.
"I get it, man. If I had a sister, I'd protect her, too, but your sister is old enough to make those decisions herself. If she wants to be with me, you should let her," Mason said,"Besides, we're just friends right now, so you have nothing to worry about." He added, causing Gilbert to sigh.
"It's a rule, and you need to stick to it." Gilbert retorted, and Mason chuckled humorlessly.
"You'll see later that you're wrong, and she won't be alone forever." Mason replied, before he turned to leave.
"Are you leaving, Mason?" Arnie called, causing him to turn back around.
"Yeah, I gotta pick up a part for my car, but I'll see you again soon, Arnie." Mason answered, and Arnie smiled.
"Goodbye, Mason." Arnie replied, but Gilbert shook his head.
"It's not goodbye, Arnie." Gilbert commented, making Mason chuckle.
"Actually, I'd say it's more like I'll see you later." Mason said, causing Arnie to laugh.
"I'll see you later, Mason." Arnie replied, waving to Mason.
Mason smiled at the boy and waved politely before he left. He climbed back into his car and drove to the autoshop to pick up the part he had ordered, before he drove to the drugstore where Giselle was working. He walked straight inside and up to the front. He had to wait behind an old lady picking up her medications. Once he was in front of Giselle, she gave him a smile.
"Hey, I wasn't expecting to see you twice today." She commented, making him chuckle.
"Yeah, I'm full of surprises," He replied,"actually, I was wondering if you would like to go out to dinner with me sometime this week?" He asked, causing her to smile.
"I don't know, I mean, I don't get off work until late, and I know my family would flip out if I didn't get home on time, and--" She began, but Mason cut her off.
"I get it, Giselle," He replied, turning away,"If you didn't want to go out with me, you could've at least told me." He added, making her frown.
"W-wait!" She called, halting him at the door,"I want to go, I just--I'll have to ask to get off a couple of hours early or something." She said, causing him to smile again.
"How about Friday?" He asked, and she nodded.
"Just pick me up from here." She replied, causing him to nod as well.
Mason left almost right after, and he couldn't stop the satisfied grin that came to his lips. He wasn't asking her out only to spite her brother, since he really liked her, but to spite Gilbert was a bonus. He just hoped she liked the date, because if it went well, he planned to ask her to go out on another one soon.
Giselle could feel her heart beating rapidly in her chest after Mason asked her out. She was excited for the date, even though she felt a little worried about her family finding out. She didn't know what their reaction would be, but she was almost sure she wouldn't like most of them. The only two people that she felt would somewhat support her would be Amy and Arnie. Arnie seemed to support every choice she made, even the little crazy ones.
For the rest of the day, she thought about all the things Mason could possibly bring her to do for the date. She was excited, and her heart raced with excitement. She hoped he didn't plan to do anything too fancy, since she never wore fancy clothes to work. If she was honest, she believed Mason would bring her on the first date that she would actually consider a date. Her last and only date was definitely not a date, since he simply walked with her outside and practically complained about his life for an hour. She was almost sure Mason wasn't like that...
