Ellie's second week at Hogwarts was just as delightful as her first.
By the end of the week, Ellie had surpassed Hermione for top of the class. Albeit, her homework marks were a little higher than Hermione's due to Professor Quirrell's fear of the girl and Professor Snape's hatred for the Gryffindors.
Ellie began to pull ahead of Hermione in charms, despite spending most of her class time reading books she had taken from the library and finishing any homework she had yet to complete, usually finishing it on the day it was assigned. And, when tiny Professor Flitwick first noticed she was not paying attention in class, he called upon her to demonstrate the wand lighting charm that he had just begun to teach.
Without missing a beat, Ellie's head flicked up along with her wand. As she waved it, reciting the incantation, Lumos, a small, white sphere of light illuminated from the tip of her wand. Before Professor Flitwick could say anything else, Ellie pointed her wand directly at him, still emitting a small light, and recited a second incantation, Lumos Solem. The sphere immediately condensed into a narrow beam and a small circle of light hovered gently on Flitwick's forehead. At this, the other first-years in the class tired to suppress their giggles and Professor Flitwick was looking quite irritated at the girl's flaunting successes. However, again, before Professor Flitwick could move on from his failed teaching moment and regain control of the class, Ellie swiftly moved her wand upwards to point right above Flitwick's head, flicked it a few times with ease and recited the incantation, Lumos Maxima, at the top of her voice. This time, none of the other first-years saw how the small beam of light morphed into a blinding flash, filling the room and knocking Flitwick off of his pedestal, as they all squinted, trying adjust to the room's new brightness. At that, a disgruntled Professor Flitwick scurried back up on his pedestal and did not dare try to disrupt Ellie's newfound reading time ever again, trusting that whatever he was teaching, she already knew.
As Ellie left Flitwick's classroom that day, she swore she heard him mutter something along the lines of, 'just like her father,' followed by a few nettled grunts. She couldn't be sure of what she heard, but if he did say something about her father, it quite pleased her to be just like him, and she took it as a complement.
Along with outperforming Hermione in charms, as well as potions, though Ellie didn't dare make a scene in Professor Snape's classroom for fear of loosing anything near and dear to her, she also pulled vastly ahead in Defense Against the Dark Arts.
On the day jittery Professor Quirrell took a break from stuttering about vampires in Romania and decided to teach the class how to shoot defensive red signaling sparks out of the ends of their wands, Ellie took her chance to make the man's fear of her at least justified, she thought.
Ellie sat patiently, twirling her wand in her slender fingers until a few of the other first-years had successfully shot red sparks out of the tips of their wands into the air, completing the Vermillious Charm. By then, the class was nearing its end and the first-years who had successfully produced red sparks had turned to taunt Ellie for not being able to achieve something that they had. Taking it as her time to shine, Ellie winked at Hermione who was sat besides her and raised her wand as she stood up from her desk. She swirled her wand in the air with haste and recited the incantation for the Smokescreen Spell, Fumos, a spell she was sure none of the other first-years had mastered yet. Suddenly, smoke emitted from the end of Ellie's wand filling the room and from the front, a small yelp issued from Quirrell. Acting quickly before the smoke faded, Ellie sent red and green sparks flying throughout the room as she moved towards the front where she knew Quirrell was stood. A few students, apparently hit by the sparks, hitched in pain, and others began to panic at their lack of visibility, and Professor Quirrell's horrified voice was barely audible as he tried to clear the smoke and calm down the first-years. A few panicked moments later, Quirrell had managed to clear the smoke, but failed to notice Ellie standing behind him on top of the teacher's table at the front of the room. All eyes were locked on her as Professor Quirrell began to ask if everyone was okay, but before he could finish, he practically jumped out of his skin, leaving it behind, as a few red sparks that he had desired the students to create, shot directly into his turban which began to sizzle. Ellie was unsure if he even saw it was her who shot the sparks. Quirrell ran out of the room without looking back, his hands patting his turban, screaming as he went.
