It was just beginning to be sunrise, Ruby trailing behind JJ as he found the perfect spot to start creating the flag.
She laid beside him for a while before hugging him from behind and laying her head on his back, feeling each muscle move as he drew,
In the time they'd been there JJ and Ruby had never been happier, this was their own little slice of paradise. Something they'd been looking for all their lives.
Eventually when the flag was done Ruby sat in the sand, cheering him on as he tied it to the palm tree, the look of admiration in her eyes was something he would never forget.
Everyone else wanted a rescue but they didn't, they didn't see a reason to leave such a perfect place just to go back to the outer banks, back to all the problems.
She laughed as he picked her up, spinning her around until they both were dizzy, but they didn't care.
So they went to their spot, making new spears and fixing up the old ones, enjoying the nice breeze as they worked.
They both looked different now- Ruby's natural curls had come back and her hair was longer and bleached from the sun, she'd also gotten a bit tanner, showing more of her freckles.
JJ? Well he was mostly the same, he'd gotten a bit more muscle, his hair had grown out into a mullet- but Ruby still loved him just the same.
But JJ found a new love for her curls, always absentmindedly playing with them when he had the chance to.
After a bit they took a break, Ruby laying her head in his lap as they talked about anything and everything.
She'd never seen JJ this happy before and she was living for every moment of it, his smile giving her butterflies each time.
She leaned up and he leaned down, their lips connecting in a sweet kiss, the ocean, the breeze and the sunrise surrounding them.
As they moved closer there was only one thought in their minds.
This truly was paradise
