"Maxine-"
"Max" I corrected Madison groggily from the kitchen counter as I took another bite of my Frosted Flakes.
"Right" she smiled, "I'm inviting some of my friends over later for a movie night- I asked Mom and she said you can watch the movies with us- " when I raised my brows- because did she just say Mom- like, my mom is her mom? "But only if you want to" she quickly added.
"I'm fine" I took another spoon full of cereal and ate it.
A glint of sadness filled her eyes and she nodded, "okay-" she said softly, her smile never left her face, "are you going to ride with us today?"
I shook my head.
"I told you Mads" Henry appeared from the hallway with a chuckle, he was brushing his wavy red hair while walking over to me, "There's no use in asking her" he took my spoon- which was now in my bowl of cereal, and ate some of my cereal.
My brows furrowed, "Hey-" I swatted his hand away, "get your own".
"Yours taste better" his voice was muffled due to the half-chewed cereal still in his mouth.
I rolled my eyes in a joking matter, "go to school".
"I'm sorry- did you give birth to me?" He placed his hands on his hips like a teenage girl while giving me the funniest face ever.
I laughed, "Yes, yes I did".
Madison looked from me to Henry before saying to Henry, "I'll be in Dad's car".
"Okay," He smiled at her. After Madison had left, Henry sighed, "Why don't you at least try to get to know her?" He asked, "And Steven?"
"I already do!" I protested, "I've shared a room with Madison for months- I know she wakes up at five to do her skincare, I know she likes asking me weird sex questions- and that she's Filipino".
Henry gave me a look, "everybody in this house knows that!" Henry looked away, "Well- maybe not the sex questions but..."
"See" I smiled innocently and ate my last spoon full of cereal, "that's all I need to know".
And that was sort of true.
Madison is the type of girl middle school me would've loved to be friends with- she's "trendy", smiles a lot, highlights her hair at least once every month, and invites her friends over every weekend to do something with her- whether it was shopping or movies- she was always invited to someone's birthday party, was the "mean-but-nice" friend- and has snacks on her all the time.
So with that information, I could hide away in my room or at Layla or Laney's house whenever her giggling sixth-grader friends were over.
Henry sighed, "You're hopeless".
"I am not".
"You are-" he kneeled and grabbed his bookbag while saying, "Hey Max".
"Hm?"
"Madison's friend Isabelle is having a big-sister-little-sister sleepover in January" he looked me right in my eyes and said, "Promise me you'll at least go for her when she asks?"
"No promises," I said, I joked- and half of me wondered how he knew this.
But I didn't question it- not out loud, anyways.
"Max," he said in a serious tone.
"Okay- okay," I chuckled, throwing my hands up in surrender, "I promise".
"Thank you" he nodded before starting towards the door, "feed Piper before you leave!" He yelled over his shoulder.
Damn it.
