I woke up to the sound of knocking at my door. We had gotten to the hotel at around 3:30 a.m and I was not ready to get up. I looked at the clock that read 9:00 and I groaned. I got up and headed towards the sound that had sadly disturbed my slumber. I opened it and rubbed my eyes. Dressed in a too tight pair of jeans, a Glamour Kills t shirt and a snapback, stood Colby.

"What are you doing here?" I said groggily.

"Nice pjs."

"Haha, what do you want?"

"I thought since we are going to try and be nice, we should try spending some time getting to know each other a bit so that we can get along."

"Are you serious?"

"Completely. Now, get dressed so we can go."

I closed the door and sighed. I contemplated going back to bed but I knew he would start knocking at the door soon enough. I decided to go along with this thing he had planned and get dressed (...). I finished getting ready and walked out the door.

"Wow, you look nice."

"Yeah, ok. Let's go, please."

He smiled and I followed him to his car. He drove out of the city and we ended up at some farm.

"A farm? Why are you bringing me to a farm?"

"Just go with it."

He got out of the car and I followed after him. He greeted a guy who looked like he could have been the main character of a horror movie as he was dressed in a pair of overalls covered in blood.

"Um, why is there blood on you?"

He laughed. I wanted to leave.

"One of my cows got hurt and so I was patching her up."

"Don't you need a vet for that?"

"I am a vet."

"Really?"

"Yeah. I went to veterinary school but decided I didn't particularly want to work in an office all day so I decided to open a farm and if one of animals got hurt, I could help them myself. It is also much cheaper too."

I laughed. "So, what animals do you own?"

"All kinds. I have chickens, cows, pigs, ducks..."

And that was when we heard a noise from an animal.

"Oh, that's my cow."

He ran into the barn and we followed after him. A cow was laying on the ground and was making some groans here and there and I saw two legs poking out from behind her tail.

"She is going into labor."

"Right now?"

He nodded. "Would you mind going and just petting her?"

I walked over to the cow's head and she looked at me. I got close to her and started petting her head. "Hey, pretty girl. How are you? My name is Marci."

"Can you help me with this cow, Colby?"

I watched as Colby got down in the dirt and helped the farmer with the birth of the baby. I just kept petting the cow and talking to her as they pulled out the baby calf.

"And, we're done."

The farmer brought the calf over to head of the mother. The mama cow started to lick the calf.

"It's so cute."

I smiled and looked back at Colby. He was covered in liquid and so was the farmer.

"Go ahead, laugh it up."

"I'm not going to laugh. That was really cool."

"Really? You thought that was cool?"

"Yeah, when I was five years old, I always wanted a cow."

"Why would you want a cow?"

"We went on the field trip to a farm and I always thought the cows were really cool and so I asked my parents if I could get a cow for my birthday and just keep it in the garage. I asked for weeks and I ran down to the garage on my birthday hoping to see a cow and all I got was a giant stuffed animal one. I cried all day. The the next day, my dad took me to a farm and I got spend a whole day with a bunch of cows. I was so happy after that." I smiled at the memory.

Colby smiled back. "Wow, I never knew that about you."

And then I froze. He was right. I had never said anything this extensive to anyone expect maybe my friend Trina. Why did I tell him any of that?

"Do you have a bathroom?"

"Yeah. Go right into the house and go through the kitchen. First door on your left."

"Thanks."

I got up and went quickly into the house and into the bathroom. I was starting to have anxiety. I never told people a lot about my personal life especially not Colby. What was happening? Don't freak out, Marci. It will all be ok. You can do this. I took a couple of breaths before walking back out to the barn. Colby was petting the cow and he looked almost a peace here which was really weird. Colby didn't seem like the type of guy who would like this kind of stuff. I could picture him in an air conditioned gym working out on modern technology but never in some hot barn out in the middle of nowhere.

"So, let me show you the rest of the place."

"So, tell me. Why did we go to a farm?"

It was getting late when we finally left the farm. I got to ride a horse and it was like I was back in my element again. I used to be pretty big into horse back riding but I stopped after I got into middle school. Being back on a horse felt almost natural.

"Well, I actually asked Jon what you might like to do for fun and he said he saw a picture of you on a horse when he came to your apartment one time."

"Oh, yeah. I used to ride horses a lot."

"What made you quit?"

Oh, no. Why were things getting personal again? And I was stuck in this car. I couldn't go anywhere.

"Just decided to stop."

It didn't look he accepted this as a full answer but I wasn't going to tell him why I stopped. That would be too much personal stuff for one day. Colby didn't need to know about me, we just had to get along. No reason to give our life stories. I smiled as the farm was put in the distance. Though Colby was a jerk, he was pretty nice today. I actually liked this side of Colby. But, how long would it last?
