"And, how does this look?"

I spun around and saw Mercedes nodding in approval.

"That looks good."

"Yeah? It doesn't look completely ridiculous?"

"No, it looks good."

I brought Mercedes along with me to go shopping. I don't remember the last time I went shopping for something other than unflattering shirts and jeans. It was awkward spinning around and having Mercedes approve or disapprove of what I was trying on but I trusted her on what looked good and what didn't.

"Ok, I'll get these too."

I watched as the worker that was helping us with everything, smiled even brighter. She was going to have a really good paycheck.

"I'm going to get dressed."

"Wait, let me grab something else for you to try on really quick."

"Ok?"

I went back into the dressing room and waited until Mercedes brought me what she wanted me to try on. I pulled off the other clothes and put them on top of the door. They were pulled off and something was thrown on top. I recognized what it was.

"Mercedes."

I peeked out of the door. I watched as she smirked.

"I'm not trying this on."

"Please. No one else is going to see."

I felt unsure but sighed and put the thing on. I didn't even look at myself in the mirror as I put it on. I opened the door and walked out.

"Wow. Girl, look at you. You have curves."

I slowly turned to look at myself in the mirror and I was pleasantly surprised. I actually looked good.

"You should wear dresses more often."

I smiled. I actually did remember when I last wore a dress. It was my fifth grade graduation. My mom had picked it out for me and it wasn't very nice but I felt pretty in it. That was until my brothers made fun of it. After that, I stopped wearing dresses. Then it just made sense after I decided to stop trying to get attention from guys. But this, this was different. The dress accentuated my curves and made me look beautiful.

"I'm buying this too."

I watched Mercedes smile. I went back in and got dressed in my normal clothes and then purchased everything.

"That will be 700 dollars."

"What?"

"The dress is 250."

"Oh."

I didn't have that much money. I wanted it so bad.

"Just...put it back."

The woman nodded and placed the dress behind her. I paid for the rest of my clothes and she put them in several bags. Mercedes and I started to walk out of the store when Mercedes stopped.

"I forgot my phone. You go on and I'll catch up."

"You sure? I can wait."

"No, the mall is close to closing and we have to get to the shoe store before it closes."

"Ok."

I walked to the shoe store and luckily got there with an hour to spare. I started trying on shoes and found some pairs I liked. I waited for Mercedes to show and saw her run in. She looked at the shoes I picked out and she said she liked a couple of pairs. I paid for them and we went back to the car. I put my purchases in the trunk and then we went back to the hotel.

"Thank you so much for going with me today."

"It was my pleasure. Night."

"Night."

I went to my room and started getting ready for bed. I was packing all my new clothes in my suitcase when I heard a knock at my door. I got up and went to the door. I looked out the peephole but no one stood in front of it. I opened the door and saw a dress bag on the floor. I opened it to find my dress inside. What the? A note was attached to the bag.

You thought I would just let you leave this city without this dress in your suitcase? Guess again. I expect you to wear this to the Hall of Fame in April.
- Mercedes

I held back tears as I pulled the dress inside and packed it in my suitcase. I don't know what I did to deserve this or how I was going to repay her for this but I was grateful to have a friend like Mercedes.
