I walked out and grabbed a plate and started loading it up with food.
"Good morning."
I jumped and some of my food fell to the floor.
"Great."
"Sorry, didn't mean to scare you."
I turned around to see Colby standing near me. I sighed and set down my plate.
"Look, about last night..."
"Wait, I know what you are going to say so let me say what I need to say."
"Fine."
"I enjoyed spending time with you. I know that we have never seen eye to eye and we have both been mean to each other..."
"Well, you've been more mean than I have."
He sighed. "But I liked us being together last night. It was fun. And I can see that it might scare you a bit."
"Why would that scare me?"
"Because you're closed off..."
And those four little words struck me. Colby kept talking but I wasn't paying any attention. All I was thinking about was what Colby said. Was it that obvious? How did he know I was closed off? We barely knew each other.
"I have to go."
I started walking away as fast as I could. I went to the one place I felt safe. The gym. I felt safe here for some reason. I sat there for a while just thinking that Colby found out I was closed off. I tried to hide that fact but he had found out. What was I going to do? I don't know how long I sat in that gym. Must have been hours. I was crying by that point, something I usually never did.
"Marci?"
The lights flipped on and Colby stood in the doorway.
"Go away, Colby."
Colby came into the room anyways. He sat down beside me and pushed some of my hair back that had fallen into my face. "Marci, what is wrong?"
"Don't worry about it."
"Are you crying?"
"Just go away."
"Is it something I said?"
All of my emotions I usually kept under control burst out like a volcano at that point. I stood up, suddenly angry.
"I was doing just fine, you know? I had everything under control. I didn't get close to people. I made sure I kept my distance and then you show up. You start messing with my life and make me think things I shouldn't. I have worked my whole life for this and you're trying to ruin it. Why? Why would you do that?"
"Marci, what are you talking about?"
"My whole life, I have worked for approval and making people proud. My parents, my friends and everyone else around me holds me to a higher standard. I have to be perfect and I make sure I had no distractions from becoming perfect. Then you show up and start distracting me from my goal."
"Marci, nobody is perfect."
"I have to be! I have to. My brothers aren't A plus members of society and I knew that my parents and everyone around me would then expect me to pick up the slack. I got great grades, worked hard and made sure I made something of myself. I have high expectations on my shoulders, Colby, and I can't have you messing that up."
I walked out of the room after that. Colby wasn't going to distract me from my goal. I had to be what I strive to be and no one was going to mess that up for me.
