"What if she hates this? Am I even dressed properly? What if she doesn't want to go out with me?"

"You look fine, Colby. Would you quit worrying about it? She wouldn't have said yes if she didn't want to go out with you."

"You're right, you're right."

It didn't calm me down much as I continued to worry. Tonight was my date with Marci. I was really nervous. Most of my 'dates' were random women at bars that came back to my hotel room. I hadn't been on an actual date since Cameron which had been several years ago. And I really liked Marci. I didn't want to screw this up. I heard the click of heels and looked to see Mercedes and Marci walking towards us. She looked absolutely beautiful. She looked at me and smiled. Mercedes let go of her and Marci walked towards me but as she did, she stumbled and I had to catch her. I tried hard not to but I laughed and she looked mortified.

"Weak in the knees for me, sweetheart? To be honest, I'm a bit nervous too."

And I wasn't lying either. I was scared out of my mind. She laughed and looked at me. The joke seemed to calm her down.

"No, it is these stupid torture devices on my feet."

I looked down at her feet to notice she was wearing heels. Marci didn't wear heels. Did she put them on for me? I didn't much like that she was going to hurt herself just to look nice. I needed to be careful and help her as she seemed a bit unstable walking on her own two feet.

"Oh, I didn't notice them before. Well, I will make sure you don't fall."

I took her arm and linked it around mine. I went as slow as I could, making sure she didn't trip.

"Now, go have fun you crazy kids but don't keep her out to late. I expect her back here by 11." I heard Jon say behind us.

"Don't worry, sir. I'll have her home by curfew."

Mercedes started to fake cry. "They grow up so fast."

I heard Marci laugh and felt her grab onto me as we stepped off the curb. So far, so good. I helped her into the car and took a deep breath. I could do this. It is just a date. Right?

"No, I fell right into the pool!"

She started laughing as I told her a story about a party I went to in high school. We were at my favorite restaurant in town and she seemed to like it.

"I love your laugh."

Geez, great job. I hadn't meant to say it but I just blurted it out. She giggled which was something I had never heard before. I smiled and took a sip of my beer, trying to stop the laughter. She was so different tonight.

"So, tell me a story."

"My life is pretty boring."

"Come on, you've got to have some kind of ridiculous story."

She looked terrified and was quiet for several minutes. I had scared her. Great job, you idiot. I grabbed her hand and she looked to be worried about what I was going to say.

"How about right now?"

She looked confused. "What?"

"This date. This is crazy. I remember how much you despised me and I get why you would. I was a jerk. And now we are on a date together. I seems like a crazy enough story to me. A story for the ages."

"Yeah, I guess it is."

I smiled and I could see her relax a bit as we continued our dinner.

I asked her to take a walk with me after dinner. The bright lights of the city were beautiful at night as we walked. We had been going through town for quite a while and I started to notice Marci slowing town. I heard her groan quietly even though she thought I didn't notice. Then she started to stumble. She wasn't saying anything which was making me a little annoyed. Why wouldn't she just tell me her feet were hurting? I wasn't going to be mad if she did. I finally stopped walking and she did too.
