I knocked on the door. After Marci left the gym yesterday, I decided to give her some space. She had been crying and was emotional. I had never seen her like that before. She was usually like a brick wall, making sure those types of things were never shown. I had to know what was wrong with her.
"Marci, it's me. Can I come in? I think we need to talk."
I knocked again.
"Marci, come on. Look, how about this? I tell you one secret, ok? I tell you something and then you tell me something. You don't have to open the door. Just, talk to me."
I sighed.
"I'm scared. I'm scared of a lot of things. It may not seem like it but there have been...some things that have happened that make me like this. I try and act like this guy who can't get hurt or whatever but the truth is, I'm scared inside. I'm scared of letting people in, just like you. I don't want to get hurt again I guess. I tried to avoid you but I just can't. No matter how hard I try, I can't stay away. It's stupid and I know it is but it is the way I feel. When I see you, everything just feels... different, I guess... Marci, I'm starting to feel like an idiot out here. Can you let me in?"
I knocked again.
"Come on, Marci."
I knocked three more times.
"What are you doing?"
I looked to the left of me to see Jon. I backed away from the door.
"Nothing."
"What are you doing knocking on Marci's door?"
"This is Marci's door? Whoops, my bad. I thought this was Joe's room."
"Joe's room is upstairs. You know this. You have a key."
"Right, right. My bad. I'll, um, be going up there now."
"Colby, you are such a terrible liar. Seriously, why are you knocking on her door?"
I sighed. "She seemed upset yesterday and I was seeing if she was ok."
"Why were you two together?"
"I said good morning to her and she got upset and ran off. She was crying in the gym and I was just checking on her."
"You two...were hanging out?"
"Yeah. Why does that matter? You two dating or something?"
"No."
"Then stop wondering what we were doing together and help me see what is wrong with her."
Jon sighed and came over to the door.
"Marci. Hey, it's Jon. Can you open the door?"
No answer and Jon knocked a couple more times. It seemed like Jon was getting worried too. We both started pounding on the door.
"What are you guys doing?"
We both looked to see Joe looking at us like we were crazy.
Jon spoke up first. "Colby said Marci seemed upset yesterday and we are trying to make sure she is ok."
"Why was Colby hanging out with Marci?"
I sighed. This was getting ridiculous. "Does it matter why I was hanging out with her?! Why do you guys have to be so protective, huh?! She is a grown woman!"
Jon and Joe looked at me. I cleared my throat.
"Can you just help us see if she is ok?"
"Well, she seemed pretty fine this morning."
"You saw her?"
"Yeah, as she was leaving the hotel."
"Leaving the hotel to where?"
"She said she had some things to take care of some things at home. The room has been empty for a couple hours."
"Then why didn't you say anything a couple of minutes ago?!"
"Because I thought it was funny to see how worried you were over a girl you told me a couple of weeks ago you didn't care for at all."
"Are you serious?"
"Oh come on, Lopez, stop getting all flustered. I'm going to the gym. I'll see you guys later."
Joe walked away after that and I could see Jon trying not to laugh.
"What?"
"I mean, he is right. You told us that you wanted to avoid her a couple of weeks ago and now you guys are talking and you're all worried about her."
"I can't be worried about a co worker who happens to be working very closely with us? I'm just making sure she is going to be ok for today. She is going to leave the group and I am making sure she doesn't mess it up."
"Yeah. Ok."
"What is that supposed to mean? You don't believe me?"
"I've just seen a change in you these past few weeks, Colby. You seem, better, I guess."
"Better?"
"Yeah. You're worried about Marci, you seemed pretty upset when you heard about Marci leaving. Is my boy actually developing feelings for a girl?"
"Pfft, no. You're crazy. You know me. I don't have serious relationships."
"Except for Cameron."
The name hit me hard.
"We don't talk about her."
"Come on, Colby. We both know that is why you're like this. But what if Marci will be good for you? Maybe, just maybe, she will make you a better person than you have been. Look, take my advice or don't but I know that you have been unhappy since Cameron and I think Marci could make you happy again. But what do I know, right?"
Jon walked off after that. Was he right? Could Marci make me happy again?
