Mat and I stood together on the bridge, looking at the shimmering water below us

Mat and I stood together on the bridge, looking at the shimmering water below us. The look in his eyes was reminiscent of the stars shining in the night sky above us. I turned my head to see him next to me, his head down and buried in his arms.

"What's wrong, Mat?" I asked, wrapping my arm around him. He moved his head out of his arms and turned toward me.

"Nothing. 'Just thinking about life." He answered, rubbing his eyes. I knew he was hiding it so I kept nagging him.

"How do you really feel?" I said and gave him a kiss. "You can tell me anything you want, you know that."

"Fine, it's just that I'm still mad about the playoffs." He scoffed. "How did Florida barely get into the playoffs and end up making it to the final, but when we did that we lost in round one to Carolina?"

"I'm sorry, babe, but that's just how it is sometimes." I said and hugged him tight. "Can't do anything about it now."

"I guess." He mumbled. I grabbed his hand and we started to walk down the bridge together.

It started sprinkling and the droplets of water cooled us down, as well as looked amazing as they reflected the lights from the buildings near us. Mat still looked sad, so I gave him another kiss and smiled.

"You know, Mat, you don't have to be so hard on yourself." I said. "You have to love yourself, just like you love me." I added and saw his face light up. I took out my phone and opened Spotify to play our favorite playlist—full of Queen songs, because who doesn't like Freddie Mercury?

We got to the end of the bridge and found a small park. Even though all the benches were wet from the rain, Mat and I sat down on one of them together. I put my phone in my pocket—still playing music—and picked him up, laying him down in my lap.

"I don't deserve you, Y/N." He sighed, looking up at the pitch black sky. I ran my hands through his hair and caressed his face, enchanted at the feel of his soft, smooth skin. No, baby—you deserve everything. I looked at him and smiled.

"Look at me, babe, sit up and look at me." I said in a sweet but firm voice and he sat up in my lap, facing me. I put my hands on his shoulders and stared into his eyes. "Don't say that, Mathew—you deserve me and everyone and everything else in your life."

"I guess. But how do I deserve you when all I am is a crybaby, and all you are is perfect?" He asked, shedding a few tears. I brought him close to me and kissed him on the lips, then laid him down in my lap again. It started to rain a little harder and we were probably drenched by now, but I didn't care.

"I'm not perfect, and you're not a crybaby either, babe." I softly said, caressing him again. "You deserve me just as much as I deserve you—you mean the world to me-" I added, getting cut off by the sound of thunder nearby.

"Continue, love." Mat said and turned around, now lying on his stomach. I cracked my knuckles, put my hands on his back, and started massaging him. "Thank you, Y/N..."

"Whenever I'm feeling down, like you are right now, you make me feel so much better." I softly said and ran my hands through his hair. "Your words, your touch, your love, your everything—all of that is enough to banish the negative thoughts from my mind forever."

He sat up and looked into my eyes, his face red and a big smile resting on his face. "Really?" He asked and rested his hands on my cheeks, bringing my face close to his.

"Would I ever lie to you, baby?" I said and hugged him. "Now, let me do the same for you."

I got off the bench, arms wrapped around him, and we stood in the park together. We were about to make out when I noticed my phone was still playing music, and I went to shut it off. After I did, I checked the time and realized exactly how late it was—we'd been out for a few hours now—and grabbed his hand, looking at the buildings in the distance.

"We should probably get going soon... It's almost 11, and I'm really tired." I yawned. Mat nodded and we started walking toward our apartment complex, our path illuminated by the stars and lights around us.

"Thanks for cheering me up, Y/N." He said as we held hands and went to cross the bridge, making our way back home. "I love you so much, I really do."

"Tell me something I don't know... And, you're welcome, Mathew." I said in a smug voice and kissed him on the cheek. "I love you so much, too."
