Ginevra tossed and turned in the bed as she lay next to Chiara. It was late in the night and the other girls had been asleep for hours. She had been trying but couldn't fall asleep, she had too much on her mind. In fear of waking the other two girls, she decided to go and grab a glass of water. Since it was so late in the evening she didn't bother putting on any shorts. If she did happen to run into anyone in the kitchen, her shirt was long enough to cover what needed to be covered.
She quietly opened the door and closed it behind her. She made her way to the kitchen, turning on a small light so that she could get a glass. Opening up the cabinet she let out a sigh seeing that the only glasses that were in there were on the top shelf. The one her 5'4 self couldn't reach. She stood on her tiptoes reaching her hand up, her fingertips brushing the glass. Ginevra groaned as she stared up at the glass. She sucked in a breath reaching back up for the glass.
"Need help?" someone said behind her. Ginevra turned around to see Niccolo standing by the counter. He had his arms crossed over his chest looking at the girl with a raised brow.
"No. I got it," Ginevra said.
"Doesn't look like you got it," Niccolo said walking to stand right in front of the girl.
Ginevra looked up to meet his gaze. It was dark but she could still see his piercing blue eyes. Niccolo leaned forward, their bodies almost touching, as he grabbed the glass from the shelf. He sat the glass down on the counter behind the girl. Niccolo placed his hand on the counter next to the girl's hip. He looked back down at the girl still standing close. She refused to look him in the eye but she could feel his breath on her cheek.
"Look, I wanted to say I'm sorry about earlier," Niccolo said. She looked up to meet his gaze. "I didn't mean to upset you."
"It's fine, Niccolo," Ginevra said. Truthfully how was he supposed to know what was actually going on? She wasn't like most teenagers, and she didn't have most teenage girl problems.
"It's not. I didn't mean to make you cry," Niccolo said, "You can talk to me if you want. I'm here if you need me."
Ginevra furrowed her brows looking at the boy, "Since when do you care about me or what I do?"
Silence fell over the two. She tried to read his expression but she couldn't. There were no emotions behind his eyes. Niccolo dropped his head, his hair brushing the side of her face. Quiet laughter fills the space between them.
"What's so funny?" Ginevra asked making Niccolo look up at her. As soon as their eyes met, his laughter stopped.
"Well?" Ginevra asked meeting his gaze. Niccolo's eyes moved down her body and she became very aware that she was only in a T-shirt and underwear. She felt completely naked under his gaze, almost uncomfortable. Niccolo had never looked at her like this before. She didn't know why he was looking at her like this now.
"Ginevra," someone said in the hallway. Niccolo took a step away from the girl and they both turned to see Chiara walking out from the hall. "What are you guys doing? It's like 3 in the morning."
"I um...I came to get water," Ginevra said.
"Yeah, me too," Niccolo said, "I just needed some water."
Chiara looked from her friend to her best friend's brother suspiciously. Her eyes locked with Ginevra's and she gave her an I'll tell you later look.
"All right well I'm gonna go back to bed," Chiara said, "You coming Ginevra?"
"I gotta fill up my glass," Ginevra said holding up the cup, "I'll be there in a minute."
Chiara sent more glance at Niccolo before turning to walk back down the hallway leaving the two alone again. Ginevra let out a sigh, closing her eyes. She leaned back against the counter behind her.
"Ginevra," Niccolo said taking a step toward the girl.
"Don't," Ginevra said walking over to the sink. She turned on the water filling up her cup. Shakily, she brought the cup up to her lips taking a sip.
"Come on, Ginevra," Niccolo said standing behind her. She turned around to look at him. That same look in his eyes.
"I better get to bed. Chiara is waiting on me," Ginevra said stepping to the side to walk past Niccolo, "Goodnight."
She walked back to Camilla's room, quietly entering the room. She hoped that Chiara was already back asleep. She laid down on the bed and Chiara turn to face her.
"What were you two doing?" Chiara asked.
"I told you," Ginevra said, "I went to get water and when I was grabbing a cup Niccolo came out to grab water for himself. That's it."
"It didn't look like that was it," Chiara questioned.
"What are you trying to say?" Ginevra asked starting to get angry. She didn't like what Chiara was implying.
"N-nothing," Chiara said, "Forget about it." Chiara rolled over in bed so that her back was to her friend. Ginevra squeezed her eyes shut rolling onto her back. She stared up at the ceiling thinking back to the way Niccolo touched her in the kitchen. He'd never looked at her in that way. She was just his younger sister's best friend, nothing more.
