Ginevra lay in Cami's bed zoning out as a movie played in the background. Chiara had left a few hours ago to head home. Ginevra didn't exactly want to go home so she hoped that Cami wouldn't mind her staying another night. If her parents said no, hopefully, she could go to Chiara's.
"Are you planning on staying another night?" Cami asked looking over at her friend.
"If that's all right," Ginevra said, "I would hate to overstay my welcome."
Cami laughed at her friend's words, "You could never overstay your welcome here. I mean you practically live here. My parents think of you as one of their daughters."
Ginevra knew that Cami was right. Out of her two best friends, Cami's house was the one she stayed at the most. She was always the first person she would call when she needed help. Cami was the closest thing she had to family. After her mom's death, the Rossi parents took her in like she was their own.
"You sure your parents won't mind?" Ginevra asked.
"Will it make you feel better if I go and ask them?" Cami asked.
Ginevra sent her a smile and Cami got off the bed rolling her eyes. Even though it was normal for her to stay, she always hated to do so without asking. She never wanted to feel like a burden to anyone, ever.
She turned back to the movie that was playing on the tv. It was a movie they'd seen a thousand times, she could recite every word. Being bored of the movie Ginevra reached for her phone to scroll through social media to pass the time. She checked a few stories smiling about the ones that Cami and Chiara posted for the day. Her smile dropped when Virginia's story showed up on her phone. She was kissing Niccolo, and for some reason that put a weird feeling in her stomach.
As the door clicked open Ginevra locked her phone and looked up at Cami who was walking in, "So?"
"Like I said. You're welcome to stay," Cami said, "My mom's even making your favorite for dinner."
"I love your mom's lasagna," Ginevra smiled.
"I know you do," Cami smiled, "That's why I asked her to make it."
Ginevra smiled looking at her friend. The two friends turned their attention back to the movie, Ginevra once again zoning out. Her mind drifted back to the other night. The way Niccolo looked into her eyes. She had never seen him in that way before. Usually, he always had on this tough guy player act. But the other night he was different, he seemed caring and kind.
"What's been on your mind?" Cami asked looking at her friend.
"Nothing," Ginevra lied.
"Oh come on. You've been so spaced out lately," Cami said, "You know you can talk to me about anything."
"It's really nothing. I've just been thinking about school a lot lately," Ginevra said.
"What about it?" Cami asked, "Are you getting worried about going to America?"
The mention of America was like a punch in the gut. She honestly hadn't even thought about America since it was first brought up. She had tried to talk to her dad about it, she truly did. But he refused to sign her slip, he wasn't even drunk when he said no. She thought about foraging his signature but then she didn't know what would happen if she got chosen to go. It was her, Chiara, and Cami's plan to go together. It would be a fun adventure for the group.
"No, it's not that. ," Ginevra lied, "We just have to wait for the school to accept it."
"We are all going to have so much fun in America!" Cami cheered.
"That's only if we all three get selected," Ginevra reminded.
"Oh course they'll pick us. How could they not?" Cami asked.
"I just wouldn't get your hope up yet," Ginevra said.
"Too late," Cami laughed making Ginevra laugh too.
"Girls! Dinner is ready," Mrs. Rossi yelled.
"Come on. It's time for your mom's famous lasagna," Ginevra smiled getting off the bed.
Cami and Ginevra got off the bed walking out to the kitchen where her mom and dad were sitting at the table.
"Thank you for making lasagna," Ginevra smiled at Mrs. Rossi.
"You're welcome, sweetheart. I know it's your favorite," Mrs. Rossi smiled.
"Are we waiting for Nicco?" Cami asked.
"No. He said that he might not be here for dinner," Mr. Rossi said grabbing the salad bowl.
Ginevra was somewhat relieved that Nicco wouldn't be here for dinner. She didn't really want to see him at the moment.
"How is school going Ginevra?" Mr. Rossi asked looking at the girl, "Making good grades I assume."
"It's going well. I've been able to get good grades in all of my subjects," Ginevra said.
"We wouldn't expect anything less," Mrs. Rossi smiled.
"You girls are going to do so well in America," Mr. Rossi said.
"They have to get selected first," Mrs. Rossi reminded.
"Of course, they'll get selected. Who could compare to these two and Chiara?" Mr. Rossi asked.
Ginevra sent him a smile. Mr. Rossi always made sure his children knew how proud he was of them, and with all of her time spent at the Rossi house that had transferred to Ginevra as well. She looked down at the piece of lasagna that was on her plate. Thank god for Mrs. Rossi's famous lasagna, she needed it tonight.
The rest of the dinner was filled with small talk and laughter. They made it through the whole dinner and Ginevra felt a bit more relaxed. She wasn't thinking about school, her father, or Nicco.
"I got the dishes," Ginevra said grabbing Mrs. Rossi's plate.
"Are you sure sweetie?" Mrs. Rossi asked.
"Yeah, it's my house. I can do them," Cami said grabbing her dad's plate.
"It's really no problem. I know you have some homework that you need to finish," Ginevra said.
"All right. Well if you need any help I'll be in my room," Cami said placing the two plates that were in her hand in the sink.
"I'll help you put away the food," Mrs. Rossi said.
"No, no. Why don't you two go and relax, I got it," Ginevra smiled at the two parents.
"Are you sure?" Mrs. Rossi asked.
"Yes. I insist," Ginevra smiled.
"That is very kind of you Ginevra. We'll be in our room if you need anything," Mr. Rossi smiled.
Ginevra sent the two parents a smile as they walked down the hall to their bedroom. Truthfully, this was the least she could do for them after everything they'd done for her over the years.
