Ginevra placed the leftover lasagna into a container and placed it in the refrigerator. Since Nicco wasn't at dinner there was quite a bit left over. Dishes on lasagna night were also somewhat of a pain to do. You had to make sure that the red sauce didn't stain everything.
She picked up the sponge that was on the back of the sink and placed some dish soap on it when she heard the front door open. She looked up seeing Nicco walk into the kitchen. Before his eyes could meet hers she looked back down at the dishes in the sink.
"How did Cami con you into doing dishes on lasagna night?" Nicco laughed.
"She didn't. I offered to do them," Ginevra said starting to wash one of the plates.
"Why'd you do that?" Nicco asked.
"Because I'm a nice person," Ginevra said looking up at the boy.
They held eye contact for a moment before she looked back down at the dishes.
"Do you need help?" Nicco asked making Ginevra laugh, "What?"
"You are offering to help me with dishes on lasagna night?" Ginevra asked, "I one time saw you pay Cami a whole week's allowance just so that you didn't have to do dishes on lasagna night."
Nicco started laughing making Ginevra laugh even more, "Yeah that wasn't the best trade. I remember that was the same week a new game came out. All of my friends at school were bragging about the game and I had to wait a whole week before I could buy it because I had given Cami my money."
Nicco walked over toward Ginevra grabbing a towel from the drawer, "How about you wash and I'll dry and them put away?"
"Sure. With two of us we should be able to get this done in no time," Ginevra said.
Nicco nodded his head picking up one of the dishes she had already washed. The two were silent as Ginevra washed and Nicco dried. She was grateful that he hadn't tried to bring up the other night.
"Are you getting excited about maybe going to America?" Nicco asked glancing at the girl.
"Umm yeah," Ginevra said.
"You don't seem excited," Nicco said, "What's up? You don't want to go?"
"No, no. I do," Ginevra said, "I'm just trying not to get my hopes up in case I don't get selected."
Nicco started laughing making Ginevra give him a questioning look, "Why are you laughing?"
"Why are you pretending like they won't select you? You're the smartest girl in your year," Nicco said.
"The selection process isn't all based on academics," Ginevra said, "Plus I just don't want to get my hopes up."
"If they don't pick you they're stupid," Nicco said walking over to place the last dish in the cabinet.
Ginevra thought about questioning Nicco on why he was being so nice to her but decided against it. She had known him pretty much her whole life and he'd never once been this nice to her. Even though it was messing with her head, she really didn't want to do anything to mess it up.
"Are you hungry?" Ginevra asked.
"A little bit," Nicco said.
"Why don't you sit down? There's some leftover lasagna, I can warm you up some," Ginevra said.
"I can do it myself," Nicco said.
"I insist. My treat for helping me with the dishes," Ginevra said.
Nicco went to open his mouth to argue but Ginevra cut him off, "And I won't take no for an answer. Sit."
Nicco walked over to the table sitting down as Ginevra pulled the lasagna out of the fridge. She could feel his eyes on her the entire time she was making the plate, but she didn't look up at him once.
"Here you go," Ginevra said setting the plate down in front of the boy.
"Thank you," Nicco smiled at the girl.
"You want something to drink?" she asked.
"I can get it myself," Nicco said starting to get up. Ginevrea placed her hand on his shoulder pushing him back into the seat.
"Sit. What do you want?" she asked.
"Just water is fine," Nicco said.
She walked over, grabbed a glass, and filled it with water before walking back toward the boy.
"Do you need anything else?" Ginevra asked.
"I don't think so," Nicco said.
"All right. Well, I'm gonna head to bed. Gotta get some rest for school tomorrow," Ginevra said walking away from the table, "Don't stay up too late."
"I won't," Nicco said.
Ginevra sent him one last smile before continuing to walk toward the hallway.
"Ginevra," Nicco said making her stop and turn toward him, "Thank you."
"You're welcome," she said.
"Goodnight," Nicco smiled.
"Goodnight," Ginevra replied before turning to walk down the hall.
Bypassing Cami's room she headed straight for the bathroom. She shut the door behind her as she leaned up against it. There were so many throughs running through her head. Why was Nicco being so nice to her? What did he want? Ginevra only knew one thing for certain, she wasn't going to get very good sleep tonight.
