After the long night of freezing and terror we finally arrived in New York. But the time we got off the boat the sun was fully risen. The girls had no sign of there parents making it aboard and I had asked Thomas but he thought it was unlikely they even had birth certificates which meant to the USA they didn't exist.
One thing lead to another we waited 2 hours for everyone to get off the Carpathia. My heart racing every-time I saw someone that look remotely like either of my parents. The last two passengers, one with long brown hair and the other a Brooklyn accent flooding the air hopped off the dock. It was mum and dad!
I ran as fast as I could Thomas turned around with the girls wondering what all the commotion was. Then smiled.
I jumped into my mum's arms as my dad embraced us both in a hug.
"Mum I'm so sorry the last thing we did was fight."
"Oh sweetheart I'm above it now I'm so glad you made it your fiancé had us on the first life boat out of there!! And who are they darling?"
Mum pointed at Ruth and Dorothy.
"I saved them mum. Thomas and I saved them as we dropped into the water they jumped and we caught one each. They're parents. We're you guys the last.?""Oh my dear gosh we are the last passengers I'm afraid and they haven't gotten any other family?"
"Sadly not" I shook my head and kicked the ground.
"We'll surely there would be an adoption agency for them shall we have a look?"
"No mum, the girls are staying with Thomas and I, and that's final."
"Well darling seems to me your taking on a lot. With a new fiancé, finding a home and now this" she pointed at them
"Well mum dad it's been lovely but I'm afraid we have to look for our home to raise our family in. I will be at the local New Yorker until Friday if you need anything or get a phone number in that time we'd be happy to host you." I walked away no further words were exchanged. I couldn't believe it.
I hoped she wasn't right. I hoped Thomas was ok with this after all I think this was the distraction that he needed.
Thomas and I walked hand in hand as the girls lingered on either side of us.
New York was fairly busy. I wasn't sure how long we'd stay but it was home for now. The girls seemed to like it. They mentioned they previously resided in the Irish country side and had never seen a city like New York. It certainly
Was something else.
Show girls seemed to be a big thing, American flags hung every which way.
The fist thing I did when we arrived at the hotel was have an hour long hot shower. I clicked the radio on for the girls and Thomas rung Harland and Wolff. When I got out of the shower Thomas and the girls were asleep together in our king bed.
I had gotten the staff to put a twin bed in our room as well for the girls to share, we were strangers and I was definitely amused at the current scenario in our living room.
After putting on my night gown I ordered some dinner.
It was 6:00 American time but I was so jet legged. I wished things had gone better with my mother but I supposed she just needed time to get used to the idea.
After a couple minutes of contemplating I curled up with Thomas under the blankets knowing dinner would arrive in a few hours.Flash back to the night of the sinking(dream)
All I could see was endless darkness beneath me as we rowed on. Screaming broke the silence as the cold hard bodies we rowed through fell to the bottom of the ocean floor. We looked for survivors but we were too late. Guilt flooded through everyone. It was too late. As we continued rowing but as Thomas picked up the paddle a frozen passenger climbed aboard I shook him trying to get his attention but it was too late the creature jumped on to me strangling me with its cold icy hands that were white and the dark purple circles under the eyes were the last thing I saw"No no!! HELP HELP!!" Adalyn thrashed and screamed waking Thomas and the girls up.
"Girls bathroom now!"
Ruth and Dorothy ran.
"Adalyn Adalyn!!! Your ok darling your safe sweetheart your ok I'm here nothings going to happen to you" she woke up with a wild look on her eyes as she started sobbing uncontrollably I felt terrible I held her as she sobbed rubbing her back. After about 20 minutes she fell back asleep and the girls came back in the room.
"Is she alright? Ruth looked slightly scared
"Yes girls she alright just had a bad dream we all do sometimes but this one was a bad one. Come on now dinners almost here" I ushered the girls to the small kitchen table while I kept my eye on Adalyn she was really shaken up worse then either of the times Ismay got her. It worries me. The girls seemed to be a good distraction for her and I both. They started growing on me dearly.
One thing was for sure I would Marry Adalyn. She was the one for me. She read me like a book. And the way she took these girls in under her wing. My heart loved her all the more.
