Car horns.
That's all I heard probably the yellow taxis as the hustle and bustle picked up first thing.
I turned over in bed to see Thomas still lying next to me and the girls content on their bed.
Marvellous!
What a night it had been I slept all night after Thomas came to bed though it felt untrue.
By the looks of it they had dinner without me.

Dishes piled in the sink were, clean? My goodness and all the dinner put away in the fridge. Thomas. My cheeks glowing. How did I get so lucky. I felt a bit ashamed. He situated the girls and cleaned up while caring for me.
I got up and put my pillow in my place. Thomas steering ever so slightly then smiling as he cuddled with the pillow.
The washroom was small but I could make do just fine. I set my hair did my makeup and fastened my dress. Thomas had left a note on my dresser reading:
my dear love, your mother has phoned asking for you to meet her at "henrys" an American breakfast first thing in the morning, yours truly Thomas.

I glanced at my Perl covered watched left a note to Thomas kissed it and slowly closed the door behind me.
As I crept down the hallway the wooden floor groaning in protest I found a set of stairs still adjusting to the New York ways. Each step I took my heels clicked and clanged until I reached the main lobby. It was beautifully decorated with taste might I add.
The wall paper had beautiful blossoms, it was lit with a soft warm light. I left the lit room and emerged outside. Birds chirping, people everywhere, show girls everywhere else horses, taxis and anything more you could image but above all my senses picked up a delicious smell.
My goodness it was coffee. How I missed it.
I looked up at the restaurant straight outside my hotel, too spooked to move. And then I realized that was "Henry's" I looked both ways before crossing the road. An old habit of mine that my mother instilled on me at such a young age.
I greeted the doorman and tipped my head. The restaurant was smaller then expected. It smelled of potatoes and hardy meat which I desperately wanted. After all I had to blend in as a new American woman. The waitress greeted me, and sat me in a corner with a booth. She brought coffee and water over and made small chit chat.
"So your not from around here are ya miss?"
The waitress had long brown hair and doe like brown eyes.
"I can't say that much now can I was it the Accent?"
She laughed as I tried to cover my British accent.
"Something like that, I'm rose if you need anything let me know" she smiled and tucked her pen and paper into her apron. I liked her she seemed about my age maybe I could befriend her. Pulling me out of my thoughts the door opened sifting in a spring of light.
It was mum.
She was dressed in a red dress looking exquisite.
"Mum!"
She smiled almost happy to see me.
I stood up as she greeted me.
"Adalyn I don't like how we left things off how are the girls and Thomas? Your father thought It be best if I can alone" her very British accent intoxicating the room.
I smiled.
"Quite so we are fine mum, you'll have to meet the girls formally. The Americans have yet to aid us in finding any sort of lineage on them so I'm sure they'll be with us indefinitely but they've grown on us. Thomas seems alright. He has been moping about recently but he has reason to. And with my sleep schedule and trying to contact Harland and Wolff who could blame him. I woke up this morning to dishes done and dinner in the fridge" I smiled brightly

"How are the marriage plans coming?" She asked briefly.
"Well we intend on marrying next week. I try on dresses today and him suits tomorrow."
"Well I should hope so. It's not everyday a fiancé with class leaves her parents and sleeps unwed with a man." She huff
I just smiled. Then the folding doors opened it was rose with our food thankfully.
"Here we have your breakfast miss?"
"Adalyn it's Adalyn" I smiled warmly

"Rose is it? What I'd give to have a hot cup of coffee and some breakfast!" Kathleen shook her head impatiently. My mum had a lot of good qualities but waiting wasn't one of them being 17 when she had me a lot of things came easier for her.
Rose was beet red appearing flustered she pulled her pen out and jotted down notes as my mum ordered.
"I see you befriended a peasant my darling, your heads in the clouds when your married your husband won't tolerate this. He is the best ship designer in the world and your befriend a waitress!" Kathleen was red steam coming for her ears practically.  Adalyn started sobbing.
The door to Henry's opened at that very moment Adalyn not knowing as she tried to wipe her tears.
As rose poured coffee two men came in. Steel curls and a yankee accent in tow.
"Well dears look who I caught out the way!" James gestured to a very smiley Thomas. Both the men looked down at the table wondering why they were met with silence.  Both men saw
Adalyn in tears and and Kathleen just shrugging. Thomas dropped some American bills on the table and pulled Adalyn away as they left the restaurant and went to the hotel. Entering their room Adalyn took her hat off and went to check on the girls. Both reading.
Deciding not to bother them she turned around to see her handsome fiancé with a distressed look upon his face.
"Thomas I'm, I- she said some things that worry me not only me but about you she said that I was inconsiderate, I should be counted lucky your only with me for I'm young and I shouldn't pull stunts like bringing the girls on you and sleeping with you before were wed and I- I..." I covered my face
It was Silent then met with the unsuspected sound of laughter. Thomas was laughing.
I slowly moved my hands from my face to see him chuckling. He threw his head up and pulled me into his chest. I loved the sound of his gruff voice against my ear.

"Darling. Now you know none of which is true ever. Don't second guess it. I love the girls if you didn't grab them I would have their pie family now. Our daughters. And soon we will be wed and possibly have a few children of our own. I maybe an excellent ship designer but that was the only true thing out of that whole ordeal. We are just settling in as a couple and as new comers among America we have our wedding next week and I can't wait to call you my bride love. Now tomorrow we have home showings to see and I got a substantial buy out from my company so I will be founding a new leg of the race I think that calls for some celebration!" Thomas pulled out champagne and the rest of the night will live on forever infamously.
