rain

Gaz and i stood there in the pouring rain as we watched the helicopter holding our teammates disappeared into the hazy cloudy distance. The rain was heavy but clear, cracks in the pale thin clouds allowing the almost transparent sunlight to seep through across the washed out light blue sky of the evening. A strong wind blew towards us, allowing the tears that had swelled up in my eyes to fall free and the corners and be blown of, indecipherable from the rain pummelling down against the damn soaked soil beneath our feel. I shivered from the harsh coldness of the wind but also from the feeling that was deep inside my chest, knowing that i didn't get a proper goodbye. Gaz noticed my shiver and balancing on one leg with his crutch beneath his arm, he slipped his black windbreaker jacket off and draped it over my shoulders to keep me warm. "they'll be ok." he said reassuringly but the words did nothing to the anxious knot within my head.

I looked up at him, my eyes pale in this lighting and just stared helplessly into his dark brown gaze, searching for that comfort i had felt with Soap and Ghost but knowing that i'd never find it until they were back. "let's go in, Price ordered take out." Gaz said with a small nod, i didnt want to go in yet but knew that i'd probably have to eventually, but eventually wasn't yet. "you go on i'll be in in a minute..." i said quietly and watched as he let out a sigh knowing that it wouldn't just be a minute, but also knowing me well enough that he shouldn't interfere. He nodded reluctantly and hobbled in the glass doors on the roof, away from the helipad and down the stairs into the main building.

As soon as he was gone i stared back into the sky as if thinking that the helicopter would emerge back from the clouds and back to base even though i knew that that was impossible, see i was stupid but not that stupid. Tears fell freely from my eyes except my already sad expression didn't sadden and no sound came from my sobs, it was more just letting out all the tears i has held back as i watched them leave, not wanting to make their departure any more difficult for any of us. Another breeze came by, blowing the hood of Gaz's jacket off my head and allowing the rain to drench my loose hair, the moist strands clinging to the sides of my face and my neck. I stared down at the ground, watching the rain drops dance around my feet, glistening in the hollow sunlight. A small brown bird hopped about in the puddles, shaking its fluffy pointlessly to get the droplets off just for them to accumulate again within seconds. It was a wren. I watched it closely until it got fed up of its wet cycle and flew off,  the same path the helicopter took.

I quickly turned around and went in the doors, closing them quickly behind me, rain drops falling from the jacket and onto the matted tiled floors, leaving a trail of small puddles as i carefully made my way down the stairs. the lights weren't on in the building like usual, no yellow buzz illuminating the dim corridors, just the blueish light reflecting itself off the white walls of this silent building. The only sound around was the sound of my shoes as i slowly walked along these wooden floor boards, following the corridor past all the doors until i made it to the kitchen where all my memories flooded back to me, könig teasing my height, Simon protecting me, Soap burning his toast, Gaz eating his yogurt, how it was never empty... except for now. Tears almost came to my eyes again but i quickly ushered them away and looked for Gaz because no matter what the one thing i couldn't handel was being along right now.

i left the kitchen through the other door and kept walking, passing door after door of my teammates, passing room after room of where they had once slept. I had passed the meeting room quickly when i turned back after hearing voices. I cautiously peered around the door frame and saw Price and Gaz. Price explaining something with a tired and remorseful expression and Gaz listening but trying not to with his head in his hands. "is everything ok..?" i asked quietly and Prices instantly looked up at my figure standing in the door frame, for a split second he looked as if he had seen a ghost but almost immediately shook off that look back to the expression he had before, Gaz stayed still and silent.
"No, please sit down y/n.." Price instructed as he stared straight ahead, no longer looking at me. hesitantly i did. as he asked of and sat down next to Gaz, looking up at Price with still watery eyes awaiting for him to speak. Price finally spoke after swallowing hard "y/n... a mission has come in."

And with those words my heart sank, my eyes instantly filling with panic as i gazed at him silently pleading that this was some kinda of sick joke. "no..no, there can't be..." i whispered quietly beneath my breath as i looked at him, tears rimming the corners of my eyes as i shook my head slowly. "and since your the only one fit enough for it here... you'll have to take it.." Price said, his cold almost unsure look meeting mine. Right as those words left his mouth, tears began to fall again.
