"it's just a small mission, in and out in a closed off war torn town. A perimeter was made and everywhere within was cleared out by laswell's own personal team so your sure to be safe." Price explained as i continued to try to understand the words he had said initially; another mission? right after i just let me friends and what feel like family go in one?? "Price you better be fucking joking" i warned, my voice tied between anger and sadness.
He shook his head silently. "Price- but why? Why again? Why me?" i pleaded with him, just about getting my words out. "Wren, i don't have any say in these missions and i've told you this a hundred times. i just pass in the message and send who ever is fit for task at hand." explained Price, the smallest ounce of remorse in his voice as he spoke.I hated how he lied, i knew that he did get a say but honestly i was just so sick of arguing and fighting that i just went quite. I could feel Price's cold blue eyes staring at me as if awaiting for me to speak back but much to not just Price but also Gaz's amazement i didnt. "The mission is in 3 days, in and out collecting a file. Like i said the area was sweeper by Laswell's top soldiers and closed off at the borders by border guards who won't let anyone other than yourself in. Is all that understood, Wren?" Price asked with a harsh tone. I didn't respond. "Is that understood, Wren?" he asked again, his patience running low. "Yes." i responsed bitterly. "Yes what?" He asked again, i swear to god could this man not shut up. "Yes, Sir." He gave a quick nod and left the room, closing the door behind him leaving Gaz and I alone in there.
it was silence until Gaz broke it. "Well fuck him anyway." He said as he tossed one of his crutches onto the floor by his chair. "agreed" was all i could say in response. I loved Gaz simply because he basically had no filter, he always spoke what was on his mind, even if that got him into trouble like it always had. "are you seriously gonna do that mission??" he asked as he looked up at me. I layed back in my chair, stretching my hands upwards and letting out a tired yawn. "Don't think i have much of a choice to be honest..." i responded. "I hate this job but love it at the same time. It's...tragically beautiful" i continued, my voice shaky as i began to think of the mission more and more, staring straight down aimlessly at the meeting table that presented itself in front of me. He looked up with a worn out expression plastered across his face amd nodded, clearly understanding exactly what i meant by that. "Anyway it might be good for me, to keep me distracted until the others get back... anyway apparently it'll be safe.. according to Price..." i continued slowly lacking the original trust and confidence i had in my statement as i continued on.
The silence fell upon the room once again, this time for longer that previously. "Have you thought about death..?" Gaz asked suddenly out of the blue. Instantly my eyes shot up and met his. His question in all honesty caught me off guard. "I- well- Of course i have but...i try not to" i said, looking in his eyes with worry trying to fathom why he'd ask such a question, especially given our circumstances. "Gaz.. are you ok?" i asked back with noticeable concern in my tone. "yeah... yeah i'm fine don't worry.." he said hesitantly, i could tell he wasn't. "i'm just going to go to my room..." before i could say anything or stop him he was already gone. "but you haven't eaten..." i tried to say after him but he was gone to quickly for him to even catch a single word. I slouched down into my chair a tossed my head back against the back of the chair. Was Gaz alright?
I got up with the intentions to go check on Gaz but the rumble from my stomach stopped me in my tracks. Kinda forgot i hadn't eaten yet today. Quickly i made my way to the kitchen and just made up a simple pasta, enough for two people. I divided it into two bowls and speed walked over to Gaz's room, knocking on the door with my knee since my hands were full with the two relatively large bowls of pasta.
There was a concerningly long moment of silence with no movement or sound coming from his room. I waited for another minute before knocking a bit more aggressively with my knee, calling out his name as well. "Gaz! i have food for you! open the door please! i'm worried about you..." i called out but once again i was met with no response. Panic was building up within me. I kneed the door repetitively, each time rougher, so much so that i could feel a bruise forming on my knee. I became frantic as the time with no response grew longer and longer. "Kyle open the door!! this isn't funny!" the worry and panic in my voice was audible as i yelled. After another second of silence from his side i caved and broke the door off it's hinges with my knee, sustaining some damage to myself in the process. As soon as i saw him i stared at him in shock, the two bowls of pasta falling from my hands onto the floor and tears sweltering up within my eyes.
He looked pale, all parts of his face and hands that had once radiated a rosy bronze blushed haze were now a washed out purpleish blue. There he layed on the floor, the pill bottle of his pain medication for his wounds in his hands.
