"you ready?" asked the officer as he patted the back of my bullet proof vest lightly, my eyes looking off into the town that now seemed to have a thin layer of fog falling upon it like everywhere else. "Yes sir." i said back with a small smile before he gave me a nod to go ahead. My foot stepped cautiously into the abandoned town and stayed there for a moment before i entered fully and began walking. It was completely silent all around, the only think i could hear being my breathing.
For the first few minutes my eyes kept glancing around my surroundings cautiously, looking in each window of each torn building, glass sugar coating their frames. Eventually after the first hour of walking i had accepted or at least tried to convince myself that this area had been swept by the team who brought me here and that it was safe.
As time moved on, rain began to drizzle harder again, a drip hitting my gear every now and then. Puddles began to form along the shattered cobble path ways and roads, making me more aware as to not step in one since it could have been however deep since most of them weren't just potholes but rather bomb craters. I reached into my tactical vests front pocket and pulled out the map, holding my hand above it as i looked at it in order to try to prevent it from getting too wet, it seemed i was only around 10 minutes away now. As i walked the fog slowly started thinning out but the rain grew heavier. I looked down the street ahead and suddenly saw the building with the file i was sent to get.
To be fair Price was right so far, this mission way easy. I just went into the building and low and behold there was the file, alone in a filing cabinet. I couldn't help but relate to the file as i took it in my hands and out of the cabinet, brushing the dust away with my fingers gently as i did so. It was alone in here, in this room, in this house, in this town. Just there to be taken and used elsewhere. I slid it gently into the top of my vest where my bullet proof plate should have been, just so it would be safe from the rain. As i left the building i could help but thing of the last late night talk i had with Simon.
We had both been sitting on the floor of my room, my head against his lap as he gently stroked my hair. It was the night before his mission and we were just talking about anything and everything we could to distract ourselves from reality but i couldn't help but let one thing slip in the moment. "wouldn't it be funny if this night was the last night we ever talked to eachother?" I asked quietly, not really understanding the meaning behind what i had said in the moment and only understanding now as i reflected on it. "Don't be stupid, y/n." He had said it with such a calm tone but i couldn't help but understand the slight worry behind his words. Then of course he hadn't known that i'd be on a mission too, even i didn't know then. "I'll be fine, i'll have the boys with me anyway and the mission is nothing out of the ordinary." he had said so softly trying to reassure me, which i stupidly believed even though you should never believe anything in the military. Yet i had believed Price..?
