Abhimanyu's hands shake as he read the reports, tears slipped out one by one till he felt himself falling into a dark abyss. His vision blurred and all the letters on the sheet wrapped into one, until he could no longer comprehend what was on the reports.
Akshara had a tumor.
His first reaction was denial, he was convinced this was another patient's report, it wasn't his Akshara. Nothing could happen to her, nothing would happen to her right? He feels his heart being brutally stabbed over and over again, leaving his heart to bleed profusely.
She was happy this morning, when he first saw her. Dressed in a red saree, two strands of her hair pinned back while letting the rest graciously fall till her shoulders. It reminded him of the early days where all he would do was stare at her mesmerised at how the world had gifted him someone as beautiful inside and out as she was.
He shut his eyes as he recalls their conversation this morning.
"I just took a few tests, the doctor asked me to" She informs him and there's a reassuring smile on her face contrary to his stressed one. "I need to go back home to sort something out, but I'll be back in half hour to pick up Abhir"
"Your reports?" He asked, and she shook her head.
"I trust you to open them and give me the diagnosis, you don't have to ask. Plus this is your hospital after all" She joked lightly, yet he was still stressed. He firmly believed that nothing would happen to a good soul like her, but he couldn't get rid his concern.
How could the world be so cruel? She was the purest and most giving soul he had ever met, and she was going to suffer? A surge of anger coursed through him, and the next thing he saw was red. His hands secured a vase on his desk, and the next thing he knew he threw it with heavy force causing it to crash all over the floor.
He had to stop, control his anger. He wasn't the same person he was all those years ago, he was a father now and was trying to be a better human being. Yet how could this happen to her, it was no secret that Abhimanyu still wholeheartedly loved her. He just hid it, knowing that he didn't deserve her and she didn't love him back.
He leans against the side of his desk and falls sobbing against it, his whole life had felt like it had lost it's purpose. He couldn't recover this, all these years he had lived like a corpse only living for Roohi and the selfish consolation that she was alive and happy. But now?
Things were better between them, their son had accepted him? And at the thought of that, he remembers Abhir. Abhir would not be able to live without Akshara, and his heart broke again.
He buries his face in his hand, letting out silent sobs. A moment later, he hears the click of the door, and to his fear Akshara walks in cautiously. He stands up in an instant, and at his bloodshot eyes she knows. Her eyes fill up with tears and he shakes his head in defeat at her.
"How bad?" Her bottom lip quivers, and he let's his tears fall freely as he motions her towards his chair.
"Akshara you have a brain tumor" He doesn't know how he manages to get the words out, and he can see a series of thoughts flash through her brain and a second later she collapses onto the chair.
He sits on his knees on the floor, leaning against her chair with his hands wrapped around hers. He couldn't risk her going into a shock at this news, "Akshara I need you to focus on my voice. Listen to me. Nothing is going to happen to you, I won't let anything happen to you"
"Abhir" She says, and finally breaks down. Her first concern was her son, Abhir. Who had not known a world without the comfort of his mother, who found solace in his mother's arms. "meri bacha"
