Jessica hated it when she and Wendell had to do recon around a public place. Titans brushed past Wendell without a second glance, but if they knew he harbored a human in his pocket, they'd swarm him like a pack of wolves to take her. Ghargalossia has a strict policy about humans who wander into their land and that is to capture them and do whatever they want to them, Jessica had already come into contact with horrible giants who threatened to crush and devour her, she was only lucky Wendell found her and promise to get her back to her home. The only problem is that she can not get back home until the curse that was placed on her was lifted, how does one lift a curse? Simple, just find the Staff of Time that once belonged to one of the twelve heroes who used it to stop the titans from taking over and Jessica will be able to get through the barrier that prevents her from going back home.
Jessica slumped in the corner of the pocket, everything seemed hopeless, a weapon used in stories that her parents would tell her before bed, her headmaster might as well have exiled her in this gigantic world! Still, Jessica had to try if she wanted to get back home and see her friends again.
With nothing else to do, Jessica peaked out of the opening of the wool pocket, merchants shouted sales at their stands while titans flocked over to them looking at various products. It was funny watching these giants ggo about their daily lives, it was as if titans were not much different than humans.
Her blue eyes wandered to a stand that had a merchant selling dolls to small children; this would have meant nothing to her if she didn't notice a piece of red fabric sitting on a wooden display. Something about it just looked so familiar, like she had seen it before. Her eyes widened as a sickening reality settled into her stomach, what if she wasn't the only classmate here!
Jessica leapt out of the pocket before she had time to process anything else. Wind blew past her silver hair as she plummeted to the ground, but she muttered an incantation and forced her hand out to send a small whirlwind to catch her before she could hit the dirt road. Giants towered over her as they walked on by, not even glancing down at her, how easily one could squash her like a bug and not even know it. Panic washed over the human as she scrambled to the nearest stand and pressed herself flat onto the wooden structure to keep herself away from the footfalls. Jessica took a few deep breaths, there was no time to freakout, she was on a mission.
Being on the ground made it difficult to tell which merchant sold what, but when she saw a flock of giggling children running to one stand she knew where she needed to go. Jessica sprinted over to the sounds of laughter, while staying near the stands that kept her safe from all the titans. Once she made it there, she stared up at the stand that seemed to stretch for miles, but it wouldn't be a problem for her. She chanted another incantation to summon winds to hoist her up as a group of kids left and gently landed on the table.
Rows of wooden dolls with blank stares stood in perfect lines. Jessica was only as half as tall as they were, which only made her feel even more puny compared to the world around her, but there was no time to dwell on those thoughts; she had to race to the shelves of clothing. Keeping low, Jessica scurried over to the clothing, keeping her eye on the red fabric. The shopkeeper was too busy counting his money off to the side to notice the human.
Once she got closer to her destination, Jessica could see the red fabric was a wool beanie that was far too small for any of the dolls to wear. She felt her stomach twist into a knot as she grabbed the beanie; there couldn't be any more students in Ghargalossia. Jessica's mind tried to justify a mundane reason for such a small cap being sold in a market, but she knew who this had to belong to. The only way to confirm it was to see if his initials were marked in the beanie.
Fingers instantly wrapped around the small girl and pressed her into an awaiting palm. Instinct took over for a moment and forced Jessica to struggle in an attempt to free herself from her captor.
"Excuse me, good sir. But do you know what kind of fabric this is?" A familiar dapper voice spoke.
Jessica's movements died down once she realized it was Wendell who had grabbed her, but that didn't stop her heart from beating out of her chest as the two titans talked over her.
"My niece has been looking for new clothes for her doll." Wendell spoke casually.
"Well you've come to the right place." Said the shopkeeper.
"This would be perfect for her, how much for this?"
Jessica felt her stomach drop as Wendell swiftly moved his hand to deposit her back in his pocket. She huffed at the rough ride, but she could at least relax now that she tucked away from all the titans strolling by. Her tranquility was soon interrupted when fingers dug back into the pocket to pluck the tiny girl out. Jessica slumbled on an open palm, using her knees to keep her steady on an uneven terrain. Looking around, Jessica saw they were in a back alley where the hussle and bussle of the markets was a quiet chatter in the distance.
"What were you thinking?!" Wendell glared down at her. "Do you realize how dangerous that was?"
"Of course I do." Jessica rolled her eyes.
"You could have gotten hurt, or hurt… or both!"
"I know!" She snapped, nothing was more annoying than Wendell acting like he was her father. She knew how horrible titans were to humans, she didn't need to hear a lecture.
"Then why do something so Impulsive?" He asked.
"Because of this!" Jessica waved the red beanie up for Wendell to see. His face drew closer as his gray eyes squinted to get a better look at the hat, being so close sent a tense wave through Jessica, she wished her world didn't have to be completely filled by a giant man.
"Don't tell me you know who this belongs to."
"I was about to find out." The words caught up in her throat as she glanced down at the beanie. Her fingers traced the tag inside, time seemed to stop once she saw the initials written down.
