Family sickness follows

Chapter 19

Sienna and Niall had both recovered. Amber had recovered from it but was refusing to eat anything. Niall tried his best to make Amber eat at least small bites. Niall tried to offer Amber several foods but she refused. She was drinking ok so the dr offered to try her on some supplement shakes and juices and she could try different flavours. Niall called a pharmacy to deliver to his flat the supplement shakes and juices for his daughter. They told him it would be delivered in the next few days. Niall couldn't accept that answer and risk his daughter's health. He needed them sooner.

Niall spoke to one of the nurses at Clover ward and they said they will look and see if they have any. Niall thanked them, trusting they will get them to him soon. It was an hour later that there was a knock on the flat. Niall went to open it and received the juices and shakes. He thanked the nurse who brought them up. "Can I come in?" the nurse said. "Of course, Amber is in her room, watching TV." Niall said.

The nurse nodded and they walked in. "Amber, can we switch the tv off a minute?" Niall said. "Why is the nurse here? '' Amber asked as she turned the tv off. "I have these special drinks for you to try, I have different flavours so if you don't like one, try a different one and then let us know what ones you like," the nurse said. "Will it upset my tummy?" Amber asked with a scared whimper. "It shouldn't do, can you give one a try now?" The nurse asks. Amber let a soft whimper out but nodded, knowing she needed them if she wasn't eating anything solid.

The nurse went through the flavours of both the juice and milkshakes. "Can I try this one?" Amber said, pointing to a bottle of juice. "Of course, do you want a straw?" Niall smiled. Amber nodded. Niall went to find one in the kitchen and brought it back to his daughter. Amber cautiously took a sip of the drink. She liked it. She then slowly got the courage to take a sip from the other juices. She was avoiding the shakes for the moment. She told the nurse the flavours she liked and what ones she didn't like. "Can you try a shake for me, Amber?" the nurse said. Amber shook her head refusing to eat or drink something heavy. "How about I put a little bit in two cups and you have some and so does dad?" The nurse negotiated. Amber looked at her dad but was still reluctant to do it. "Come on, let's give it a go, you don't need to do a lot" Niall said, going to get two cups. Amber nodded, trusting her dad more than the nurse as it wasn't one she knew from her mum and even though she was being nice.

Niall passed Amber the cup with a small amount with a strawberry flavour as he had a try of it. Amber only had a couple of sips even though she liked the taste. She held the cup out. "Can you finish it for me? it wasn't much" niall coaxed the girl. Amber reluctantly did. "Ok I will leave these to try and get the flavours she likes sent up. Ideally we would like her to have a shake at each meal time" the nurse said. Niall nods thanking her. He sighed after the nurse left, knowing it would be difficult with Amber's emetophobia. Niall cuddled his daughter in her room and Amber fell asleep. Niall messaged his wife to update her about Amber and the drinks she had been trying and to find out how Harper was doing. Sienna was happy Amber had given the drinks a try. She updated Niall on how Harper was. Niall sighed as he read how his oldest was and because he couldn't be there for her as he was for Amber.

Harper was still on Clover ward, she was on the mend but her sugars weren't quite stable yet. Sienna, being a nurse, was the only one who could visit her. Sienna thanked her mum who had stayed with Harper. Sophie drove back to her house after leaving Harper with Sienna. Harper was currently having one slice of buttered toast. She tried to eat as much as she could, knowing her levels needed to improve to be allowed to go home. The girl managed half a slice of toast for now. The nurses knew it would be a long process so they didn't force her to eat more than she could.

Harper fell asleep cuddled into her mum who was now with her. Sienna held her eldest as she slept. She called Harper's nutritionist to tell her about the situation and have a plan made for the girl. The nutritionist suggested a mix of NG feeds and PN. The nurse went to explain this to Sienna who of course agreed to it. They inserted the NG tube there and the nurse then went to sort out getting Harper transferred to the hospital for the insertion of a picc line. Sienna texted Niall about the procedure and that she would go be with Harper in the hospital. Niall wished for the procedure to go well and asked Sienna to keep him updated regularly.
