Santa Barbara Co. Hospital

Michael's POV

I walked alongside the mobile hospital bed as nurses rolled Zoe to the operating room. To be honest, I was worried to death, and the closer we got the more nervous I became. Zoe however seemed as calm as can be. Every time I looked down at her she offered me a comforting smile, which made me feel ridiculous because she's the one going into surgery. I should be doing all of the comforting.

We stopped in front of the double doors that led to the room where her surgery would take place.

I held her hand in mine and kissed it. "I love you. Be strong for me, okay?"

She nodded with a small smile. "I'll do my best..."

I kissed her cheek. "I'll be right here. As always."

"The surgeons are ready for you, Mrs. Jackson." A nurse informed her.

Zoe took a deep breath and looked up at me. "You know what I just realized?" She asked.

"What's that?"

She smirked. "After this I'll only have one nice boob."

I slapped my hand over my mouth and tried to stifle my laughter. Zoe really has no filter. "You'll always be beautiful to me, baby." I chuckled.

She raised an eyebrow. "Really? Even lop sided?"

"Even lop sided..." I giggled.

She grinned. "That's how I know you're the man for me. I love you..."

"I love you more."

I kissed her forehead before the she was wheeled away and through the double doors and out of sight. I stood there for a few moments, saying a silent prayer.

"Were you planning to watch?" Nurse T asked, interrupting my thoughts.

I turned and looked at her. "Yes..."

She nodded. "Follow me. Her mother is already waiting."

I followed her around a corner and down a dark hallway. I noticed Zoe's mother, Solia, standing in the hallway, facing a glass window. I thanked Nurse T and walked the down rest of the hallway alone.

Solia noticed me waking up to her and smiled kindly. "Hello, son..." She greeted me, extending her arms.

I hugged her warmly. "Have they started yet?" I asked, afraid to face the window.

She rested a hand on my shoulder. "They just put her under. They should be starting soon." She explained. She noticed the discomfort on my face and patted my back. "You don't have to watch, Michael. If you're uncomfortable you should wait outside of the OR."

I shook my head. "I told her I would be here..."

She smiled. "Well in that case, man up and look in that window, boy."

I chuckled softly, feeling slightly relaxed as I finally turned to face the window. Zoe was laying on the operating table and the surgeons were preparing to begin. Her eyes were closed, so I could tell that the anesthesia had already kicked in.

I wiped the sweat forming on palms along the front of my pants. I noticed the surgeons removing the sheet that covered Zoe's upper half and I took a deep breath.

"Here we go..." Solia whispered. She looped and arm around my waist. "She's a strong girl, she'll be okay."

I wrapped an arm around her shoulder. "I know..."

We stood in a hugging position through the entire hour long surgery. We never left the window for a single second. Not to eat, not to use the bathroom, never.
