Michael's POV
I jogged down the wide hallway, dodging patients and barely avoiding knocking things over until I reached Zoe's room. I glanced inside through the small window on the door and noticed only Zoe and Jessie were inside. As soon as I rested my hand on the door handle, I knew something was wrong. The negative energy was thick in the air.
I pushed the door open and entered the room. "Zoe. I'm so sorry, baby. I wasn't ignoring you I promise..." I said, rushing over to her.
She looked up at me slowly. "Where the fuck were you?" She snapped.
Taken back by her harsh tone, I was silent for a few seconds. "Um.... It's a long story, babe..."
She raised an eyebrow. "A long story? I sat in here by myself and received the worst news of my life and you can't even explain why you neglected me like that?"
"The worst news of your life?" I questioned. "Wh... What did he say?"
She scoffed. "You don't care..."
I scrunched my eyebrows and sat on the edge of the bed. "Of course I care-"
"Then why weren't you here?" She interrupted.
"I'll explain later."
She shook her head as she gazed at me with disappointment. "You better hope I'm alive to hear it..." She mumbled under her breath.
My jaw dropped. "What did you just say?"
She rolled her eyes. "You heard me, Michael."
"Why would you say that?" I asked, mouth still agape.
"Don't worry about it. Just like you didn't worry about being here for me this morning..."
I took a deep breath and reached out to touch her but she shrugged me away. "Zoe, what did the doctor say? What were your results?"
She looked at Jessie with eyes that told him I was getting on her nerves. "I would've answered that question 2 hours ago..." She said sarcastically.
I looked over at Jessie as well and realized they were having some kind of hidden communication with their eyes. "Jessie, can you give us a second, please?" I asked him.
He nodded and stood from his seat. "Just call for me if you need something, Boss." He said as he walked toward the door.
"What's that supposed to mean?" I questioned. He ignored me and exited the room. "Is he trying to be a smart ass?"
Zoe wrinkled her eyebrows. "No... He's just doing his job...."
"But he's implying that you'll have to call him if you need something because I can't do it for you."
"If the shoe fits, Michael."
I sighed and reached for her hand, glad that she didn't pull away this time. "I'm sorry that I was not here for you this morning... It's eating me up inside, honestly... I wanted to be here to hold your hand just like I always do. I understand that you're upset and I am so sorry..."
She looked into my eyes and I noticed her expression soften. "Where were you, Michael?"
I shook my head. "I promise I'll explain-"
"No." She cut me off. "I don't want to be mad at you but I won't know how else to feel about it until you tell me where you were... How can I forgive you if I don't even know what happened?"
I nodded, understanding her perspective. "I was at home. When I was on my way out to come here I saw Lisa in the sitting room by the library... I have no idea how she got in there, Zoe, I swear. When I asked her she just went crazy and started breaking shit and Bill had to come help and... It was just a huge mess..."
