My eyes opened slowly, a smile plastered on my face but concealed from every other eye. Grey walked onto the stage from the shadows confidently. He was in black suit, his hair beautiful, dark and shiny. He wore a conspiratorial grin, plus his hands were pocketed. Damn! He looked like some kind of hot CEO. He looked around at the shocked faces, Steel’s was worse. He looked like he had seen a ghost in the dark.
“It seems my arrival has surprised everyone ha? My bad I greeted no one. Shem, you did a great job here. It is you time to enjoy the show as well” he waved his hand in air lazily. Shem went flying and landed on the nearby empty seat, everyone gasped.
Grey’s gaze shifted to my face, he smiled and approached.
“Am sorry am late, but am here for you now” he cupped my face with one hand and added “You look so stunning, you always find a way to surprise me” I was sure everyone on the high table could hear him. Steel grimaced
Grey waved his hand in air again and drew a seat onto the stage, he sat on it one leg on the other knee.
“I bet you all got a billion questions for me. Come on ask” no one dared to move or speak. Everyone was silent and unmoving.
“Come on speak” he stumped his foot and a crack raced from the stage to the wall beyond “wow that was a mistake” he inhaled deeply and turned towards the high table.
“Mr Steel, sadly I made it. Am alive… you tried to kill me. She saved me” everyone was surprised but I could not tell the reason “yes, she is the one who saved me…and now you think I will let you kill her?” he shook his head “Never”
“You killed my brother” Keith yelled moving in an electric speed onto the stage “what do you say about that?”
He shrugged, “was I to say anything at all?” I have never seen him this rude
“He tried to kill her!”
“And so what, the same pain I could have felt if she died…you are feeling it now. We just exchanged commodities”
“You dare compare my brother’s life to this mere human?” Keith was very bitter
“I don’t think she is mere at all. You could take the name for yourself you know!”
“GREEEY!!” Keith stumped his foot, Grey was thrown back but he was fine when he landed on his feet.
“You want a fight” Keith glared daggers at Grey “you will get it!” Grey spread his hands and lifted them slowly. His eyes turned red as a strong breeze suddenly filled the room. He joined his hands and stumped his foot, Keith went flying across the room a bundle of metals and wooden boxes following. He crashed onto the wall that cracked the metals and boxes hitting into him hard. One of the metals knocked a chandelier that fell on him. The light blinded him and he threw it away. In a blink of an eye Grey was standing in front of him. He straightened his suit jacket bossily and dusted it proudly. Oh, Grey…you are awesome!
“Don’t forget the animal you are to kill even your own mate. You are here pretending to be seeking justice for your brother. I know you are not, if you did…you shouldn’t have threatened to kill him and so he ran off. I know your motives Keith, you are not succeeding this time round.” Grey squatted before him “It will be wiser if you packed and left my coven immediately!” he rose to his feet turning to the exit.
The vampires were busy mumbling about everything leaving no one else watching Keith except me. He shot to his feet and began moving in his super speed towards Grey fist tightened. He would punch him…hard!
…head injury for an ill vampire or a poorly recovered vampire can be very tragic! Death or suffering inefficiency in controlling his power…vampires are sensitive to bright light…they go partially blind when subjected to bright direct light…I will stay back for you Grey…
Thoughts crisscrossed my mind like a flash flood, the more I stood there frozen, the more I could see Grey dying right in front of me. I stayed back for him…and I will protect him. A sudden energy overpowered me and I was running like lightning towards Keith. I skid on the floor and picked one of the chandelier’s lamp. I jumped in between Keith and Grey holding the lamp directly on Keith’s eyes. In return, his fist crashed onto my head as if a whole building had collapsed on my head. The lamp slipped off my hands…he fell on his back. A weak yelp escaped from my mouth, Grey swung around in time to catch me in his arms before I fell.
“No please no, why have you done this Becky, why?!”
“I did it for you…I stayed back for you!” I answered weakly in a whisper. My hair had fallen lose, it felt like I was carrying a sack of potatoes on my head.
“But you are not allowed to die before me!” he was terrified.
“Who told you am dying? Am here am not leaving” I answered with the little strength left in me.
I turned around in a drunkard manner. Through shadows and mist I could see Keith staggering onto his feet. One of his hands was clawed…another deadly weapon. It could make a vampire lose his power partially, which was not good for Grey. If he did the whole coven will turn out to have rogue vampires! He staggered…he was partially blind. I was busy studying his movements when I heard a familiar growl.
“Ben…no…Ben don’t do this” I shrieked on top of my voice, too late, the small panther jumped on Keith’s face and left him with deep scratches. He howled like an animal releasing his sharp claws fully. Ben was on the table glaring at Keith angrily.
“Bring it on you disgusting animal” Keith roared
“Please don’t do it Ben, for heaven’s sake don’t!”
It was too late, Ben made another jump on Keith who was waiting for him with his claws. I needed a weapon but I couldn’t find one. I parted my hair blindly. I found a hair clip that was left there. I yanked myself from Grey’s grip.
“Noooo!” he tried reaching for me, but I was speeding off like an electric train.
I raced towards Ben and Keith, I sacrificed my back for Ben. The claws dug through the fabric reaching for my skin and ripping it like a knife. I punched Ben away with my free hand, he flew across the room and landed somewhere. I used the remaining strength to hold the pin firmly, sway around and sink almost the whole of it on Keith’s neck. We howled in unison and landed on the ground simultaneously.
“No please Becky Noooo!” Grey screamed his heart out and ran to my side holding me up. I spat a mouthful of blood.
“Please don’t do this, please…” was he crying? Do vampires cry?
“It’s okay…it was worth it…you are safe, I kept the promise I made to…to myself…keeping you safe!”
“Don’t be silly Becky, this is not funny. I thought you were evil…I ruined your life, I tortured you and now you are here giving your life for me?”
“I know all that…”I touched his face with my bloody hands and smiled weakly “you did all that, because you did not know it. I have learnt a lot from Reni and Sandy. Nothing is completely evil. Everything has both sides…I have come to love vampires…I was never a hunter…I will never be” another mouthful of blood spilled from my mouth “In my second life if there is…I would like to be a vampire…isn’t that great?”
“Don’t be silly, stop talking of dying. If you dare die on me I swear I will never forgive you!”
“Am not dying…I promised to die when only you die…I keep my promises. I am left with one more to fulfil…keeping you all safe where I can….
“She gave herself for our master and Dermot’s panther. She is not a traitor at all” one vampire called.
“She shouldn’t die, she gave Master Dermot a second chance…she deserves one too” another said
“I will protect her with my life” a female young voice called…Sandy…she was sad “She is my sister from now”
The talking continued, Sandy touched my hair and sniffed “You promised Becky…please don’t die”
“I will…will keep my promise…am not dying!” I was losing focus and consciousness, I was too weak.
Grey hugged me his whole body shaking, he was torn and I had no strength or power to fix him back together. The truth remained in my heart…I was in love with him it could not escape to my mind, because he could read it. He was safe now…Ben was safe Sandy was also safe and probably Ari. The people who mattered to me now were safe. The murmuring went on I could not make out a word they were saying.
When Sandy said it too, I now could hear it but not understand at all.
“With my heart and mind am on the side of a harmless thought to be enemy. Who means no harm to me”
“Becky, why did you do this?” Grey asked in a whisper
“Because I like you”
“Then please, don’t die”
“I promise, I won’t”
“Promise you will be back to lead me to light”
“I promise”
“Promise me” he inhaled deeply “You will not do this again”
“I can’t promise…I can only tell you that…I will try not to!”
“You are very obstinate” he was mad at me as well
“Why are you sad that am hurt?” I asked as darkness slowly took over.
“Because…I like you too, and…
I could not hear the rest of the words he said, I drowned into darkness his voice that was calling unto me fading to the back of my head. Then I could hear nor see no more.
